S.S.S. :
MA.3.A.2.2: Describe how the size of the fractional part is related to the number of equal sized pieces in
the whole.
ESOL: Visual aids, hands on activity, group work.
Objective: Students will show equivalent fractions using pieces of pizza.
Materials: Book “Fraction Fun”
Pizza Party Game made from paper plates,
marker
paperclip
Procedures:
1. Ask the students to complete the problems on the board when they enter
the classroom.
2. Go over the problems. Answers are review of what was taught the day
before. This ties into their previous learning.
3. Read book.
4. Ask questions pertaining to the book. “Where any of the parts equal?”
5. Have students think/pair/share with a partner.
6. Do examples of equal fractions on the board. Have students come up to
solve problems.
7. After numerous examples, Introduce the pizza game.
8. Hand out 1 paper plate to each student. Have them construct a pizza pie on
the plate by dividing the plate into ½, 1/3, ¼, and 1/6, and 1/8. Have the
students cute and label the pieces. Then give the students one more paper
plate to make a spinner out of. Draw sections on the spinner and label the
sections: 2/4, 4/8, 2/6, 2/8,4/16,2/12,and 2/16.
9. Have students play Pizza Cover Up with the game.
Directions: 4 players per box.
Give each player a 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/6, and 1/8 pizza piece. Put the remaining
pieces back into the box. Players place their pieces face up in front of them.
The scorekeeper spins the spinner, and records each player’s points only.
When the scorekeeper spins the spinner, quickly cover your pizza that is
equal in value to the fraction spun. If you are the first player to cover the
correct piece, you earn one point. The scorekeeper decides who covered
first. If it is a tie, both players get a point. After 20 spins, count up your
points. The player who has the most points is the winner.
Assessment: This is an informal assessment. The teacher will walk around
and take notes on who is grasping the concept of the pizza pieces.
