Videos and Webinars on Organization Development (OD) and T-groups About Organization Development Background: One of the traditional threads of congregational development (OD) practice has been the field of organization development (others are ecclesiology, pastoral and ascetical theology- for more see -- http://www.congregationaldevelopment.com/storage/History%20of%20Congregational%20Development%20in%20the%2 0Episcopal%20Church%206-1-12.pdf Back in the 1960’s the Episcopal Church was an early adopter of OD. Billie Alban, an Episcopalian, was one of the practitioners developing a chart presenting the various mythologies of OD in a history time line. An early version of the chart is on page 40 of this issue of Practising Social Change (Issue 2). It’s within an article by Barbara Bunker on the history of OD. http://www.ntl-psc.org/downloads/PSC_Journal_Issue02.pdf To purchase the updated version see - http://www.ntl-psc.org/index.php?option=com_k2&view=item&layout=item&id=61&Itemid=74 The OD Network has information in it’s “About OD” section on the definition , competencies and principles of OD. http://www.odnetwork.org/ ---------------------------------These videos provide a solid introduction to the history of OD. Organization Development: Past, Present, and Future Marvin Weisbord, Warren Schmidt, Don Swartz Part 1 http://www.organizationaldynamics.upenn.edu/node/1582 Part 2 http://www.organizationaldynamics.upenn.edu/node/1583 In 1998, Organization Systems Renewal (OSR), a master's degree program at Antioch University, Seattle, invited 3 senior organization development practitioners to interact with its adult learners and faculty in a special session entitled "Organization Development: Past, Present, and Future." The panelists were -- Warren Schmidt, formerly of UCLA, co-author with Robert Tannenbaum of the revolutionary 1957 Harvard Business Review article, "How to Choose a Leadership Style," Don Swartz who was OSR's founder and former head of internal consulting at Weyerhaeuser, and Marvin Weisbord who was a regular on the OSR resource faculty from the mid-1980's. Interview with Dick Beckhard http://www.organizationaldynamics.upenn.edu/node/1621 Dick Beckhard was among the pioneer consultants who in the 1950s invented the field of organization development (OD). He pioneered T-groups and helped found the OD Network in 1967, taught with Douglas McGregor at MIT, and in 1969 co-launched the seminal 1 Addison-Wesley Organization Development Series. His innovations were legendary: intergroup confrontation meetings; responsibility charting; team building, all in service of large strategic goals for business leaders. NTL, EQ-HR and the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University have started to offer training programs to learn how to be a T-group trainer. NTL – www.NTL.org EQ-HR - http://www.eqhrcenter.org/ 2 Graduate School of Business, Stanford University – http://faculty-gsb2.stanford.edu/bristol/Facilitator_Utilization_and_Development/gftp.htm Between 2000 and 2011 dozens of Episcopal parish leaders went through T-groups with the Leadership Training Institute (LTI then part of the CDI system). More recently EQ-HR with Roy Oswald’s leadership have offered programs reaching several religious traditions. Congregational Development.com uses a t-group at the front end of its conflict management workshop (www.congregationaldevelopment.com ). To learn more: -----------------------A T-Group with Ken Benne - 1989 http://www.organizationaldynamics.upenn.edu/node/1610 Ken Benne was a co-founder of NTL Institute in 1947. He was a key developer of one of the major adult education innovations of the 20th Century, the "Basic Skills Training Group," or T-Group (in which people study their "here-and-now" behavior to become more effective in life and work). In 1989 the Blue Sky video team met NTL members Edith Seashore and Morley Segal while they were running their unique learning laboratory, "Why Interventions Work." Among the theories they explored were those underlying the T-Group. We conceived the idea to invite Ken, who was staying nearby, to put on a brief T-Group with volunteers from the lab. In less than an hour, he led group members to profound insights. Later, we videotaped Ken as he commented on the tape. May 2, 2012: NTL Institute T-Group: What is it? What is its history?
