Research Paper Syllabus –English III
Required Supplies: 50-count pack of lined 3 x 5 index cards
50-count pack of lined 4 x 6 cards
Large Paper Clips & Rubber Bands
1 Large Manila Envelope with clasp closure (index cards, rough draft, source, final etc.)
Highlighter(s)
Blue or Black ink pens
Recommended Supplies: MLA Handbook 7th Edition
Money to make 10 cent copies in the Library (you must have copies of ALL sources)
Flash drive or Jump drive to save work done at school
Topics for research: American History and American Literature
Length: 3-4 pages typed. This does NOT include the works cited page.
Grading: Work is due at the beginning of the period on deadline days, unless instructed otherwise. If you will be absent,
hand in the work early or make arrangements for a fellow classmate or parent to bring your work to school.
You may turn in the work ONE day late (not the next class meeting, but the day after the assigned due date).
NOTE: Late turn in will only be accepted at the beginning of school with a 10 point deduction. Rough Drafts
and Final Copies of the paper have a late deduction of 35 points for one day late and will not be accepted
beyond this point.
**Final Copy Due: March 3 (A Day) March 4 (B Day)**
There will be a 35 point deduction if it is turned in the very next
school day. I will not accept papers more than one day late!
Cheating/Plagiarism: Students will be posting their work on Turnitin.com. If there is any evidence of plagiarism, the
student will receive a 0. If I suspect the student did not write his/her own paper, there will be major
point deductions and/or a 0 received for the work.
Library/Before & After School: Most of the work for the research paper is done outside of school. We will be going to
the library for research Jan. 6-13. Please make every attempt to be here for those days. Students may also come to the
library before school.
Deadlines:
Jan. 9 & 10:
Return Parent letter signed. (Daily Grade)
Jan. 16 & 17:
5 Source Cards on 3 x 5 cards (must bring in all copies of sources)
Jan. 23 & 24:
40 Note Cards on 4 x 6 cards. You will make note cards from your sources,
collecting significant details that will help you develop your paper.
Secure with a rubber band and “Title Card”: name, date, and block.
(Quiz Grade)
NOT ACCEPTABLE: World Book, Britannica, Encarta, Wikipedia, school textbook,
Sparknotes or any other general encyclopedia. Have a balance between various types of sources.
*IF a source is questionable, CLEAR it with me first, otherwise I cannot give you credit!
Jan. 29 & 30:
Outline with tentative thesis (Quiz Grade)
Feb. 10 & 11:
Completed Rough Draft (1 Test Grade)
At least 3 to 4 pages typed. If you do not type the entire paper from intro to
conclusion, you are missing steps in the process and cannot be properly helped!
Must include all Parenthetical documentation.
Outline and Works Cited Page included ( paper clipped to rough draft)
You must turn in a copy to turnitin.com to receive credit
March 3 & 4:
Final Paper (3 Test Grades)
Typed 3 to 4 pages in MLA format
Required sources used in paper –5
Final Paper turned in to turnitin.com (This is required—no exceptions!)
Included in your large manila envelope:
Final Draft paper clipped
Outline
Graded Rough Draft
All copies of sources with highlighted information
All source cards and note cards
Clearance slip from the MCHS library
REMINDERS:
 If you are not present on the day an assignment is due, you are responsible for that work whether you
were present the day or days before. This is the reason you are given this syllabus.
 The paper carries the weight of 3 test grades. If you have any questions at any time, ask me.
Otherwise, I will assume you have everything under control.
 Mark the days on your calendar NOW when you have a deadline. EVERY WEEK you will have a
deadline.
 DO NOT PROCASTINATE. This will take some work and organization, but all of you are more than
capable of doing well! Keep a good attitude, and ask pertinent questions!!!
