You will evaluate nutrition-related trends and will determine how food choices can promote food security and environmental responsibility. You will learn about healthy eating, expand your repertoire of food-preparation techniques, and develop your social science research skills by investigating issues related to nutrition and health. UNITS OF STUDY Unit 1: Kitchen Essentials Kitchen and food safety Kitchen equipment, terminology, and preparation techniques Assessments: Safety Test, Food Lab, and Unit Test Unit 2: Nutrition and Wellness Nutrients Canada’s Food Guide Calories and energy balance Digestion Assessments: Personal Diet Analysis and Unit Test Unit 3: Healthy Eating for Life Nutrition throughout the lifespan Issues surrounding eating disorders and disordered eating Healthy weights Nutrition related health problems Assessments: Kraft Dinner Challenge and Unit Test Unit 4: Contemporary Issues in Food Food production, supply systems, food security Food trends Activity: Futuristic Foods ESSENTIAL LEARNINGS By the end of this course, you will be able to: Demonstrate the ability to explore topics related to nutrition and health, create a research plan, gather and assess relevant information, and communicate the results of your research Demonstrate an understanding of nutrients and their connection to one’s health Demonstrate an understanding of energy balance and how Canada’s Food Guide plays a role in promoting physical health Demonstrate an understanding of how food and nutrition needs change throughout life Make connections between nutrition, health and disease Investigate what effects an individual’s food choices and eating behavior Understand how various factors are involved in achieving and maintaining food security ASSESSMENT AND EVALUATION A variety of assessment tasks will be used to evaluate student progress. Late and Missed Assignments – To achieve success in this course, all essential course components must be demonstrated. Incomplete work is NOT an option. Cheating and Plagiarism – It is important for students to do their own best work. If a student is suspected of cheating or plagiarizing, the teacher in consultation with administration, will determine the next steps and/or consequences. Learning Skills and Work Habits – The areas of Responsibility, Organization, Independent Work, Collaboration, Initiative, and Self-regulation are important and will be assessed and reflected on the provincial report card. Attendance– Attendance and punctuality in classes are important parts of learning and an expectation of student behaviour. Lates are to be avoided to benefit from full instructional time and not disrupt other’s learning time. When a student is absent, a parent/guardian must call the school’s attendance line on the date of absence, or provide a note explaining the absence for the student to submit the following day. Students are responsible for missed work during their absence.
