The organization of this application mirrors the steps you
should take when filling out an application.
The title is first and largest, so that you can make sure you
are filling out the correct application.
The directions are next, and some of them are in uppercase
letters. This helps you remember to read them and make
sure you understand before you fill out the application.

Stories that tell of real events in a writer’s life are called
autobiographical narratives.
We have read 3 nonfiction autobiographical narratives in
class already. Can you name them?
An American Childhood, Barrio Boy, and My First Free
Summer.
Working with your group, answer the following
questions about your assigned narrative:
1. What is the story about? Summarize in one paragraph.
2. Who are the characters?
3. What is the setting? (remember it can be time and place)
4. Is this a funny time, sad time, or lesson learned? Explain.
There should be one paper for your group.
Be sure to list all group members’ names.

1. Was this an event from the narrator’s life?
2. How did the event make the narrator grow?
3. How did the event change the narrator’s outlook?
DURING: VOCABULARY WORKSHOP
Word choice is very important in writing.
 Using vague words leave the reader wondering. Replacing
general and vague words with specific and precise ones gives
the reader a clearer sense of what you’re trying to convey.
Example:
1.
The shelves in my room held all kinds of stuff. (vague)
2.
The shelves in my room held all of the souvenirs I collected
on my summer trips. (specific)
3.
The gym was adorned with decorations for the dance.
(vague)
4.
The gym was adorned with autumn colored streamers and
balloons for the dance. (specific)

When forming your narrative be sure to be specific in your
word choice.
