AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY
TANZANIA INSTITUTE OF HIGHER EDUCATION
INSTITUTE FOR EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT – EA
INTRODUCTION TO GENERAL LIBRARY AND
INFORMATION SERVICES.
Presenter(s)
Apollo K. Abungu- Senior Librarian
Catherine Wanyingi- Assistant Librarian
• User education programme is an exercise carried out by the Library staff to all new users who join the Institute as students,
Faculty members or staff.
• This is in conformity with the laid down policies that govern the library and its operations. (See Rules & Regulations II)
• Why is it important?
• New users joining IED EA usually have little or no knowledge about the layout, materials and requirements of the library.
• The Library therefore organizes an introductory program where these users are given an induction to equip them with knowledge about: -
• Rules and regulations of the library
• How to locate and borrow items/books
• How to use the catalogue for searches
• The classification system used in the library
• The materials found in the library.
• The above knowledge gained through orientation enables these users to be self reliant as far as library usage is concerned. This is the essence of user education.
Objectives
• To make users self reliant, confident, independent with regard to information searches.
• To act as a way of maximizing use of information resources and services.
• To help users to know and appreciate values and usefulness of library resources.
• To enable easy and quick location and retrieval of information resources
• To enable users to understand the library information resources organization.
• To help save users time during searches
• To create good staff/ users relationship.
