1 PLUME COLLEGE YEAR 11 INTO YEAR 12 SUMMER TRANSITION CHALLENGE 2015 Subject: Chemistry Linear or Modular A level? - Qualification/Level: A-Level Linear (New from 2015) Examination Board Edexcel In a linear A level, any AS examination at the end of Year 12 will not count towards the A level. We expect students joining the Plume College to complete a transition piece of work for each subject between the end of Key Stage 4 and the start of Key Stage 5. This is assessed and feedback given to students when they start the courses in September. The following task/ tasks are to be completed over the summer break and brought to your first lesson. The Summer Transition ‘CHALLENGE’ Research the unit ‘mole’. Explain why it is used? Now link the use of moles in calculations and titrations. Describe how to carry out an acid/base titration? Explain how the concentration can be calculated? Use this knowledge to complete the booklet questions. How the work produced will fit into subsequent work and the specification as a whole. Part of unit 1 and 2 of the AS course How the work should be presented. In the booklet provided with calculations they have carried in GCSE which lead them to AS. Students should read the instructions and follow the examples to complete the booklet. Length of time expected to complete the challenge. 6-8 hours How the work will be assessed and marked. The research report will be marked for scientific quality, along with spelling, punctuation and grammar .The booklet has space to do the calculations. Students should bring the booklet to their first lesson. The booklet will be marked in line with Edexcel criteria. The last question from each section is of an A/A* level. The levels for each task are identified below. Success criteria. (a) Recall relative formula mass and mole (Grade E/D) (b) Able to calculate Empirical formula and molecular formula (Grade E/D) (c) Apply the knowledge to calculate reacting masses (Grade B/A) (d) Able to calculate concentration of a solution and volume of gases (Grade C/B) Resources to be used for this work. The internet, GCSE Chemistry revision guide and AS Chemistry head start book Who to contact if you should require further assistance with the work before the end of term? Mrs E Early or Ms V Stewart What equipment will be needed for the subject? Scientific calculator (Casio fx-85 recommended) Extension In order to extend you knowledge further, please attempt the extension questions found at the end of each question section. These will push you towards A/A+ level grades.
