ILAC Meeting 2/14/14 In attendance: Elena Ortiz, Hershman John, Andrea Villareal, Bev Bruner, Pat Novak, Amanda Chapman, Christine Moore (note-taker). 1. English update (Hershman) Committee members viewed questions identified and reviewed by English faculty as presenting the most problems for composition students. Question numbers 5, 8, 14, 21, and 24 were discussed. Elena noted discrepancies with ILAC-prepared questions. Edits were noted, including correcting the type in #14 re: SB1070 image. Elena will contact Jan and Ann as follow-up. 2. Assessment steering committee update (Elena and Christine) A. A Canvas course has been created to centralize information about assessment. Each General Education outcome has a module. Elena has posted an intro video for IL as well as sample assessments (a rubric report and two pre/post reports). “Assignment Ideas” include several, though not all, documents from the wiki for evaluating information and for documentation. The steering committee is compiling an FAQ section and asks that each outcome committee submit questions and answers. Elena has listed the following as possible FAQ’s and asks that members add to the list based on questions they’ve had themselves or on questions asked of any of us. 1. What is information literacy, really? 2. What type of assignments can the rubric be used on? 3. How is the multiple choice test used? 4. Why isn't the test available on the website? 5. Do I need to use both test and rubric? 6. Do I need to score all the competencies for every assignment? 7. What does the score mean? B. Feb 28 Assessment event – volunteers requested to represent ILAC for breakout session “Assessment Idea Exchange.” Maybes from Hershman, Bev, and Amanda (latter two pending scheduling conflicts). Elena and Christine are confirmed. Andrea and Pat cannot attend. C. New data portal possible – members of the steering committee has been working with PVCC colleagues to adapt their gen ed assessment database for PC’s use. Work will continue through spring and summer. Introduction to and training for portal anticipated for Fall 2014. 3. Ann and Kara Vasquez - RDG091 student research project. All in attendance enthusiastically expressed willingness to be contacted by students to assist with project. Elena will respond to Ann and Kara’s email to let them know. 4. Other business/discussion items: A. Amanda noted that her students took much longer than anticipated on the pretest (40-45 minutes). She is considering cutting the number of questions. B. Suggestion to “save” some of the TIPS assignment ideas to include with the FAQs.
