Small Power Equipment Scope Coordinators: Michael Tew, Brittany Doyle Date of Competition: April 5th 2016, 7:30AM Start Location: Robert Bateman High School – Burlington, Ontario PURPOSE OF THE CHALLENGE: To evaluate each competitor’s skills and knowledge according to industry standards in the areas of inspection procedures, maintenance, and repair of small engines and recreational vehicles. SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE TO BE TESTED: Competitors will demonstrate their ability to perform repairs and diagnostics with efficiency and merit. The challenge will require the competitors to: 1. Complete a Multiple Choice theory exam relating to all aspects of gasoline and diesel engines (1 hour). 2. Perform an engine disassembly and reassembly (includes measuring of parts to specifications by using micrometers, plastigauge bearing clearance, calculate bore and stroke, Clearance volume, and total CID) (4 hours). 3. Identify various hand tools and small engine parts (.25 hours). 4. Have a Cover letter, and Résumé to be used in a mock job interview (1 hour). Evaluation: Theory 15% Practical 80% Interview 5% and tool/part identification will be performed in teams of two. one (1)hour from starting time. All the competitors will write the test at the same time. ngine operating principles (4 Stroke, 2 Stroke, and Diesel), engine parts, air/ liquid Cooled engines, fuel systems(Carburetor/Fuel Injection), emissions, and basic electrical systems (Starting, Charging, Ignition, Lighting Circuits and use of fuses on a circuit, ohms law, and some diagnostic questions. The practical components will be judged first by a time limit of fifteen (20) minutes per area, then by completeness and correctness. Students will be scheduled to complete all activities while their partner will be completing their engine disassembly and reassembly. All marks will be entered into Markbook . The person entering the scores will not be a teacher of any of the students competing in the competition. 5. Complete a small electrical task Notes:The instructors and competitors should arrive at the competition site at least 15 minutes before the start time. The competitors will bring with them a pencil and eraser for the test, appropriate clothing and footwear to allow access to the workshop. This includes full-length pants; shirts with proper sleeves that are protective but not baggy, safety glasses and proper foot wear (safety boots if possible). It is recommended that all competitors do not bring backpacks and expensive MP3 players and Cell phones must be off and out of site. Please note we are not responsible for lost or stolen goods. All competitors must bring their own safety equipment, hand tools, and measuring tools (Torque wrenches-inch lbs, feeler gauges, micrometers, and vernier caliper)
