Words & Ideas Mrs. Wells Apr 2015 6th Grade Math & 5th Grade Science Vol.2, #8 Mrs. Ghosh This quarter the fifth grade students will focus on technology in our lives. We will revisit stars and galaxies, earth and space, and we will highlight how technology has increased our knowledge in these disciplines. The sixth grade students will be exploring algebra: patterns and rules, graphing coordinates, and displaying data. They will also investigate probability, permutations and combinations. 5th Grade Social Studies Mrs. Kaur We will begin a new chapter about "The Fight for a Continent." During this time students will learn about the expansion of Spanish as well as French Colonies. They will learn how Spanish expeditions from Mexico helped spread Spanish customs, religious beliefs as well as artistic styles throughout the Southwest. They will also learn about the French and Indian War, where the French and the Native Americans fought for control of a large part of North America. Language Arts Mrs. Wells Last month we read some of our classic American tall tales about such legendary figures as Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, John Henry and Casey Jones. This month the sixth grade will research William Shakespeare and sample one of his works. The fifth grade will research Mark Twain and read one three of his short stories. We will have a workshop on internet etiquette and begin doing online discussions. They will be related to the content that we cover in language arts. They will also cross into science and social studies. Mrs. Wells Apr 2015 Vol.2, #8 5th Grade Math/6th Grade Science & Social Studies Mrs. Wells Fifth grade math will finish covering fractions and geometry. We continue to work on word problems, as well. We also continue to make the algebra connection, learning how to look at a number sentence with a, b, and c and substitute numbers to make a math problem. Example: a÷b, when a = ¾ and b = ½. The sixth grade students project-based learning exercise is designing and building a solar oven. That unit will take several weeks. There will be researching, designing, and then (yum!!) the testing!
