Washington School Foundation After School Program – Policies & Procedures
REGISTRATION AND PAYMENT: Class sign up begins Monday, August 27, 2012. If signing up online with a credit card,
please fill out all information and acknowledge the Liability Waiver at the Wildcat WebStore – www.wildcatswebstore.com. If
paying by cash or check in the office, please complete signed registration form, attach cash, separate check or money order for
each class that is made payable to Washington School Foundation, Inc., and return to the enrichment box located in the school
office. Registration forms will be available in the school office or online under the “About Us” tab at: www.wildcatswebstore.com.
All classes are on a first-come, first-served basis and therefore, we encourage online sign ups as these guarantee spots. If a
class fills up, you will be notified as soon as possible and your check/cash will be returned. If there is not enough registration to
hold the class, you will be notified the first week of classes and your check will be returned.
ENRICHMENT CONTACT: If you have questions or concerns about the enrichment classes please email
wildcatsafterschool@gmail.com. Please allow a day for a response. The front office staff is not responsible to answer your
questions about the classes.
FINANCIAL AID: Financial aid is available on a limited basis to families who qualify for free or reduced lunch and are
granted per session based on need. Please fill out the separate Financial Aid form located in the office and on the webstore and
turn into Rosa or the Enrichment box by the posted deadline before classes start.
Financial Aid will be awarded the Friday before classes begin. If you do not receive an e-mail notification by that day,
please feel free to e-mail to verify the status. If you are denied financial aid, and the class fills up it will be too late to
register for the class.
REFUNDS: When requesting a refund, it must be done by e-mail. It MUST be done by Friday of the FIRST week of classes
starting. Any refund will incur a $5 transaction fee if paid for by credit card. If you don’t receive a response within 24 hours, your
request was not received and processed. Check the e-mail address and try again. There will be no exceptions made for late
refunds/class switches. Switching classes MUST also happen by the first Friday following the start of the Enrichment Classes.
STUDENT CONDUCT: Students must conduct themselves in a respectful, attentive and safe manner. All students are expected
to follow school rules and treat the instructor respectfully. Students who are unable to comply with these rules will be dropped
from the class without a refund.
PARENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Parents are responsible for their children's supervision when not in class. Classes end promptly,
so please make sure your child knows where to go after class, if it is RAP or childcare. If your child is SICK, please email your
child’s enrichment teacher so they know in advance. If you are picking up your child at the end of the enrichment class, you must
be on time!
GETTING TO ENRICHMENT CLASSES: Students are responsible for getting to their after-school classes. An adult volunteer or
instructor will escort all kindergarten students to their enrichment class. If there are enough volunteers, first and second grade
students will be escorted for the first two weeks of the session. All K-2nd grade teachers will be given a list of after-school classes
their students have signed up for, in order to assist with transition. RAP and childcare will receive a list of students participating
in the enrichment program so they are aware that the child is expected at the end of that class.
RAIN: Outdoor classes will be CANCELLED, if weather does not permit. If your child is enrolled in an outdoor class and it is
cancelled you will receive an email the day of the class to notify you when it has been cancelled. Please make sure you have an
accurate email on file with the enrichment committee.
ONE FINAL NOTE: Washington School’s After School Enrichment Program is organized and offered by the Washington School
Foundation in accordance with the Foundation’s mission to enrich our children’s education. The fees charged for these classes
cover the cost of the instructors, materials, webstore, scholarships and printing.

Explore the basic principles of yoga through movement, games and stories. Children will develop strength, flexibility, focus
and concentration. A light snack will be provided. Please notify of any food allergies.
COOKING – Tammy Kronen

A fun and exciting class that offers a well rounded approach to teaching children the skills necessary to develop their love of
cooking. This class is designed to allow creativity to mesh with culinary techniques for exciting results. We will create
healthy and nutritious snacks as well as learning steps to help create meals at home using fresh locally grown produce.
Students will bring home samples of what was prepared in class.
LEGO ENGINEERING FUNDAMENTALS – Mack Fixler

concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as arch bridges, skyscrapers,
motorized cars, and the Battletrack! Design and build as never before, and explore your craziest ideas in a supportive
environment. An experienced instructor will challenge new and returning students to engineer at the next level.
GUITAR – Gus Detar

Learn the basics of guitar in a fun, friendly and encouraging group setting! Classes include an introduction to: Chords &
songs, scales and how to create a solo, theory, frames, tabs, lead sheet, and standard music notation (how to read music)
and guitar maintenance. Students will be divided into groups depending on age/ability. All styles of guitar are welcome
(acoustic, electric, classical). If your child does not have a guitar, please let us know and we will do our best to provide one.
All paper materials (songs, handouts, assignments) will be provided. Our goal is to provide a fun and productive atmosphere

CIRQUE DU ARTES – Onolee Zwicke

With Art Innovators, capture the beauty of animals, insects, people, plants, still life, architecture, and landscapes as you draw,
paint, collage, and sculpt your way through a rich array of creative art projects. Stretch your imagination by experiencing
different art styles and cultural art from all over the world. Be inspired by great artists and learn techniques of art, design, and
perspective. Throughout the year, students use artist quality media such as oil & soft pastels, charcoal, PRISMA illustration
markers, fabric pens, colored pencils, Aqua Stiks, clay, foil, and watercolor and Bio-color paints on a variety of surfaces: paper,

FABRIC ARTS – Kit Boone

Create beauty and fashion with fabrics. Learn how to make a pattern from your drawings to design and sew stuffed
animals, dolls ,flowers, banners, fabric pictures or anything you imagine . Create art with felt and fabric using, felting
techniques, appliqués and various sewing and embroidery stitches. Embellish your own clothes using these techniques.
Taught by a local fashion designer.

CRAFT CREATIONS – Tiffany Haller – “Mrs. H”

Arts and Crafts Class is THE best and most fun your child could have that allows them to decompress and express
themselves while enjoying every minute of it! Many students already know ”Mrs. H” as a substitute and Drawing teacher at
the school and know she always has something great up her sleeve to create. The class will consist of a weekly project with
craft project centers set up for them to explore as they finish. Some of the great crafts we will explore deal with recycled
materials, beads, clay, foam, yarn, glitter and so much more! Please hurry and reserve your space as this class has sold out
each period.
PIANO KEYBOARD CLUB – Erich Tomkinson

Kids will have the opportunity to learn their favorite songs and music on electric keyboards. Radio hits, movie and television
themes are made so easy, that our participants will be playing them after the very first class! The club is a combination of
keyboard piano lessons and music learning workshop, which uses clever visual methods to teach the basics of reading and
piano playing. Learning games and activities designed to instruct students in the fundamentals of music theory, in ways that
are fun, engaging and stimulating. Students will have great fun learning to play favorites from artists like Michael Jackson,
Taylor Swift, the Black Eyed Peas, and even classical pieces by Beethoven and Bach. Most popular of all, are television
and movie themes like those from the Wizards of Waverly Place, Star Wars, Harry Potter, Sponge Bob, Phineas & Ferb and
more. Keyboards, headphones, books and materials are provided for all participants.
TENNIS – Pete Gerstenfeld
Time: 1:40– 2:45pm, Location: On the Blacktop Grades: 1-6 (12 weeks) $147
Learn tennis skills, improve your game and have fun doing it!! Curriculum is offered by USPTA Certified Teaching
Professional, Peter Gerstenfeld, instructor of Physical Activities at UCSB & Head Tennis Professional at Bacara Resort &
Spa. Students remain engaged and energized moving through games and drills designed to be exciting while providing
repetitive practice of basic tennis skills. Classes cover proper grips, tennis-ground strokes, volleys, serves along with game
rules & strategy. Tennis rackets and balls are provided. A portable net will be set up on the designated blacktop area.
Students should wear athletic shoes & comfortable clothing to participate. Classes will be taught by Peter Gerstenfeld
and/or assistant tennis instructors who are college level team players & are trained by Mr. Gerstenfeld.

BASKETBALL – Patrick Davis

This program teaches basic basketball fundamentals. We promote the game through interpersonal skills, hard work and fair
play. Repetition is the key to improving dribbling, passing, catching, shooting and lay-up skills. Good sportsmanship and
positive behavior encourage the kids to perform to the best of their ability. Join us on the court! *Please note that on Rainy

HIP HOP – Tamarr Paul

For kids that love to move and learn fun energetic dance routines. Easy to learn and great music that kids will enjoy! Learn
the fundamentals of rhythm and beats. Dance steps that work on developing coordination. Tamarr has 20 years of
experience with hip hop choreography and has been teaching dance at local schools throughout the Santa Barbara

Use your mad design skills and science smarts to create cars, hover crafts, rockets and roller coasters. Overcome the
challenges of friction and gravity; harness the powers of propulsion and momentum to make your invention reach amazing
heights and super speeds.
ROBOTICS – Play Well Technologies

Session 1: 9/11-10/16 (6 wks) $147 Session 2: 10/23-12/11 (6 wks) $147 (each session will offer different activities)
Learn about building and programming robots using the LEGO Mindstorms NXT system. In addition to having fun,
participants learn about mechanical and software design, problem solving, and teamwork skills. Working in small groups,
students will complete several projects and mini challenges through which they will learn how to control the robot to avoid
obstacles, pick up and carry objects. Projects are structured to allow students to work in an open-ended, investigative
environment while having fun. Sign up for one or both sessions!

ULTIMATE FRISBEE – Tricia Guilfoyle

Learn the fantastic game of Ultimate Frisbee! This sport utilizes the elements of soccer, basketball and football combined.
We will do drills to practice throwing and catching a Frisbee, learn the rules of the game and have amazing fun playing one
of the fastest growing sports in the world. See you on the field!

DRAWING – Tiffany Haller “Mrs. H”

Drawing is super fun and exciting with Mrs. H! Each semester and week changes with a new theme of drawing which
includes cartooning, realistic drawing and abstract elements so that new and repeat students are continually engaged and
excited to continue to expand their drawing repertoire. Gaining success in drawing begins with identifying shapes and lines
that are common in all objects. By using shapes and lines, young artists are able to gain continued success which in turn
boosts their confidence in art and drawing as well as every subject area. Tiffany Haller, a Washington parent and fully
credentialed elementary school teacher, studied art through the Monart Academy of Drawing. . To top it off, artists will learn
fun facts about what they are drawing as well as play some super exciting drawing games! All art supplies and a healthy
snack will be provided.

MANNERS SUPERHEROES– Shawna Borgen

This course is intended to be both instructive and fun. The students learn through fun crafts such as the making and writing
of their own thank you cards, by creating their own gratitude journal, by filling out a job application and even having a "job
interview" for the job of their dreams! There are also careful discussions about the Golden Rule and many other topics
relating to the use and importance of manners. Girls and boys have made comments that they can't wait until the next
manners class! Emphasis is on learning manners through fun, crafts and food. Explore the history of how manners came
about and learn how to make friends through sportsmanship, table manners, respect, giving back, and enhance
communication through body language. Your child will build confidence and be on his or her way to becoming a Manners
Superhero!
SPANISH – Lourdes Fleisher

GARDEN CLUB – Aira Harris & Julie Peyton

We will be busy working in our school gardens this fall, learning all about its special needs like soil, water, design, as well
as, plant propagation, caring for our plants, and creating habitats for birds & butterflies. We will plant butterfly plants and
watch for monarchs. We will continue to use our garden tools such as our worm composter and garden veggie beds to
cultivate Fall/winter vegetables. In this class, students have the opportunity to cultivate gardens at their own homes by
taking home holiday plant crafts and seedlings. Students will also get to make a difference at our school by improving the
grounds with our plantings.
ONE. SOCCER SCHOOLS– Jeff Johnson “Coach JJ”

CLAY ADVENTURES – Catherine Vallance

A fun exploration of Ceramic Art, where students are challenged each week by a variety of different hand building projects.
Lessons build on ongoing skills developed throughout the session, and include working with slabs- making low and high
relief tiles, creating functional wares, non-functional sculpture and modeling. Crafted to meet the different skill levels of the
artists, the class explores ongoing projects that give children a strong foundation in 3D Art. Use of low fire Clay and painted
under glaze techniques for surface decoration.
ACADEMIC CHESS

Academic Chess teaches chess like you have never seen before! Using stories, rhymes, jokes and songs, Academic
Chess makes learning chess fun and exciting! From the starting novice to the advanced chess player, all students will learn
strong funda-mentals through our patented lessons and practice. Along with chess books, and a class chess tournament,

ART STUDIO– Barry Hollis

An art production workshop focusing on methods and materials and having fun using them. Both 2-D and 3-D art forms will
be explored. The young artists will be given hands on guidance and work time to refine what they already know, and
exposure to techniques and materials that they don't know yet and might enjoy. There will be designed projects, but
students will be given the chance to spend more or less time on projects according to their interests. The focus will always
be on fewer projects, with more time on the projects to refine them and give them a finished quality result. Things you might
expect to see in this class might be carving, casting, stenciling, painting, printmaking, assemblage, mosaics, collage,
photography, and anything else that can be used to create art. All students will also collaborate with the instructor to design
and create their own bronze coin!
SPA SCIENCE – Lee Anne Bastian

GARDEN CLUB – Aira Harris & Julie Peyton

We will be busy working in our school gardens this fall, learning all about its special needs like soil, water, design, as well
as, plant propagation, caring for our plants, and creating habitats for birds & butterflies. We will plant butterfly plants and
watch for monarchs. We will continue to use our garden tools such as our worm composter and garden veggie beds to
cultivate Fall/winter vegetables. In this class, students have the opportunity to cultivate gardens at their own homes by
taking home holiday plant crafts and seedlings. Students will also get to make a difference at our school by improving the
grounds with our plantings.

DRAWING – Tiffany Haller “Mrs. H”

Gaining success in drawing begins with identifying shapes and lines that are common in all objects as well as learning the
proper pencil grip and fine tuning the very important “fine motor skills” essential for every new kindergartner. By using
shapes and lines, young artists are able to gain continued success which in turn boosts their confidence in art and drawing
as well as every other subject area. Tiffany Haller, a Washington parent and fully credentialed elementary school teacher,
studied art through the Monart Academy of Drawing and is known by many of the children on campus as “Mrs. H”. Each
semester changes with a new theme of drawing so that repeat students are continually engaged and excited to continue to
expand their drawing repertoire. To top it off, artists will learn fun facts about what they are drawing as well as play some
super exciting drawing games! All art supplies and a healthy snack will be provided.

Clay is so much fun! Your child will absolutely fall in love with “clay creation” this semester. Students will learn the
techniques of rolling, cutting, smoothing and manipulating clay to create many masterpieces over the course of 9 weeks.
They will learn about the processes of “firing” and “glazing” clay. Clay has been proven to lower stress levels, promote
relaxation and build fine motor muscles between the fingers and palm of the hand which in turn helps in the classroom with
pencil grip, drawing and manipulating small objects. This class is sure to be a big hit and one you won’t want your child to
miss out on!
ONE. SOCCER SCHOOLS– Jeff Johnson “Coach JJ”
