Gay marriage
In contemporary society, a growing number of people admit they are gay and
want to marry the other gay people. " 'A Gallup poll conducted in May 2011 suggests
that Americans consistently overestimate the percentage of homosexual individuals
living in the United States. On average, participants estimated that 25% of the
country's population is gay or lesbian.' 'In reality, there are around 8 million
individuals who identify as gay, lesbian, or bisexual, representing 3.4% of the total
population'. 'The National Health Statistic Report of 2011 stated that of their 55,556
male participants, 1.7% identified themselves as gay.' " (Jessica,45) So gay marriage
becomes a problem to the world. And gay marriage is a debatable topic. Some people
support gay marriage and others opposite it. " 'Approval continues to rise according to
a 2012 Gallup poll, with 50% of respondents agreeing that marriage between
same-sex couples should be legally recognized at the same level as traditional
marriages' "(Jessica,45). And gay marriage is legal in some countries and some are
not. Gay people suffered discrimination in many places. However, I think we should
support gay marriage.
First, everyone has freedom to choose whom to marry. According to Wikipedia,
Voltaire has said:" I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your
right to say it,' was his attitude now" It shows the freedom is sacred. Some wish to
marry someone of their own sex since they were born. They were born with sexual
orientations, so we have no reason to criticize them. For example, Puyi, the last
Emperor of China, was a gay. But nobody cared it. While traditional China accepted
homosexuality as a normal aspect of the human condition, people in Puyi's time said
he and his wife Gobulo Wan Rong could not have children because he was infertile, a
common way of talking around homosexuality. There is even a later story of the
estranged Empress getting pregnant by her chauffeur, the baby killed at birth.("Puyi,
The Gay Last Emperor Of China",1) In nature, homosexual behaviors are found from
animals. Behavioral observations show that nearly all animal species display
homosexual behavior in some degree, both in the wild and in
captivity.("Homosexuality in the Animal Kindom", 1) Obviously, it is a good
evidence to show erotic orientations is natural instincts. It is estimated to be between
3 and 30 million species of animals inhabiting our planet. Today, homosexual
behavior has been observed in close to 1,500 species, ranging from primates to gut
worms, but generally not as an exclusive activity. However, there are exceptions. For
instance, one exception is found in domesticated sheep:"About 10% of rams (males)
refuse to mate with ewes (females) but do readily mate with other rams,"
neuroscientist Simon Levy states.("Homosexuality in the Animal Kindom",1) Above
of all showed the reason why gay people like men. It is ridiculous to say
homosexuality is against nature. Which is the quality from their parents. And they
have the choice to like the people of their own sex or not.
Second, we should respect the love of gay people. And gay people's loves are not
different from normal people's. They are attracted by the people of their own sex. It
just likes a boy is attracted by a girl. The only difference is the boy to choose a boy or
a girl. I cannot say anything weird, if a boy falls in love with the other boy. When
love is coming, nobody can refuse it. We all had the feeling that is crazy with
someone else. Countless people praise that Cinderella's story is amazing, but they
curse gay people' love. I can find anything unusual, so it is just prejudice. In fact,
most people could not point out why they hate gay people. And they just thought
homosexuality was altered from them, so homosexuality was wrong. There are no
reasons to oppose gay people. Today more brave people choose to admit they are gay.
Many superstars admit it openly. Why they did it? Because they knew what they
wanted to get, we should bless true love. The superstars' actions may reduce the
prejudices to gay people. Wentworth Earl Miller is an American actor. He is famous
for Prison Break. He pronounced himself "out" in 2013. According to " Wentworth
Miller Rejects Russian Film Festival Invitation," Actor and screenwriter Wentworth
Miller today rejected an invitation to attend the St. Petersburg International Film
Festival, citing Russia's anti-LGBT laws. In a letter to the Festival's Director, the
'Prison Break' star stated that "as a gay man, I must decline." Miller goes on to say
that he is "deeply troubled" by Russia's lawful brutality toward the LGBT community.
"I cannot in good conscience participate in a celebratory occasion hosted by a country
where people like myself are being systematically denied their basic right to live and
love openly," Miller concludes.
Third, you can stop them falling in love. You may ban gay marriage in law, but
they can still live together and fall in love. Their lives are similar as normal couples'
lives. So the ban on gay marriage does not make sense. And oppositions always lead
to reversing psychology, which make the situation cannot control any more. It is not a
good way to stop them and we also have no reason to do it. Gay people always fought
the discriminations and oppressions. Since the start of the gay liberation movement in
the 1960s and the differentiation of the Catholic Church as a result of Vatican II
(1962-1965), non-heterosexuality has become a salient and contested issue within the
Catholic and other Christian Churches. It has led to a split of the Anglican Union into
a liberal and a conservative strand. Also, within the Catholic Church, it has reinforced
the differentiation of the Church community into separate wings: liberal/progressive,
conservative and fundamentalist.(Judith, 32)
Some gay people may be compelled to date a girl or marry a girl. Their parents
may think that it leads their boy to right approach, but the little boy was not happy
actually. Countless parents think a boy should like girls. So they let their son is far
away from the boy who their son likes. The parents' erroneous guidance lead children
have bad memory of childhood. Even some children may have psychological
problems. Unable to solve their confusions, some people may adopt even tougher
measures to be revenged on society.
Admittedly, gay marriage, to some extent, may directly or indirectly oppose the
customary view, which a man should marry a woman. Nevertheless, I think the
tradition is not always correct and we should accept new things. With the science
develops, we know about human more. Homosexuality is a natural quality of
anthropological, so we should accept it.
And some people pointed out the imperfection of gay marriage, which is gay
people cannot procreate. No federal legislation prohibits discrimination based upon
sexual orientation of the prospective adoptive parents. Therefore, the treatment of gay
and lesbian adoption applicants varies from state to state. To give a few examples, the
state of Mississippi explicitly forbids adoption to same-sex couples and both Utah and
Arizona give preferential treatment to married adoption applicants while also barring
same-sex marriage. (Ryan, 976) But gay people can adopt a child. So it is not a
problem with gay marriage. And numerous people choose to be dink family, which
means a family has dual income without kids. For instance, Modern Family is a
renowned American TV show. According to " The Hollywood Report", " he
fifth-season premiere of ABC's Modern Family featured a marriage proposal that
wouldn't have been feasible only months ago. But in the wake of the U.S. Supreme
Court's June decision allowing same-sex marriage in California, producers of the
Emmy-winning comedy knew the time was right for its gay couple, Mitchell (Jesse
Tyler Ferguson) and Cameron (Eric Stonestreet), to take the plunge. " In Modern
Family, the gay family with a child who is adopted from Vietnam. Various audience
likes the family. I am one of them. I like the family. They are cute and warm. In the
family, Mitchell plays the strict role to their daughter and Cameron plays the gentle
role to their daughter. It is same as a normal family. And their daughter likes her two
fathers.
Therefore, due to the above mentioned factors, which sometimes correlate with
each other to form an organic whole and thus become more persuasive than any single
one of them, I reinforce my standpoint that gay marriage should be supported.
