CLASS 1-213B 6 PS 69 Staten Island, NY December 2013 Volume 3, Issue 3 THE GOOD NEWS GAZETTE Dear Parents, This is the second of our monthly newsletters! In this newsletter, you will find information about our classroom community. There are many great things happening! Read on to find out all of the wonderful experiences your children will share! We are so excited for this year! Love, Mrs. Knight & Mrs. Gentile Reading & Writing Students have been exposed to many complex texts including Stellaluna by Janell Cannon and Dragons and Giants, a short story from Frog and Toad Together by Arnold Lobel. The students will continue studying non-fiction with reading Elephants and Their Calves by Margaret Hall and What Do You Do With A Tail Like This by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page. The class will create a question and answer book that culminates their understanding of facts, opinions and knowledge of reading and asking questions about what they read. Students will show understanding of how text and graphic features help them learn more about what they are reading. The students will be developing their writing skills by improving basic sentence writing conventions: capitalization, structure, punctuation and spelling. REMEMBER:GOOD READERS READ EVERY DAY & GOOD WRITERS WRITE EVERY DAY! Math “Helping students learn is the end goal of New York City public schools. We are committed to providing students a solid education so they can go to college; get good jobs; and lead productive, successful lives.” (http://schools.nyc.gov/Academics/default.htm) For the second chapter in math we will be focusing on the CCLS Operations and Algebraic Thinking. The students will be developing their understanding of subtraction, and strategies for subtracting within 20. We will provide practice counting back using models with manipulatives. This visual representation of taking from numbers will expand each child’s knowledge of subtraction strategies. Remember to use flash cards to practice easy subtraction facts within 10. This Month’s Highlights Reading We will closely read What Do You Do With a Tail Like This build comprehension through learning about determining the main idea and supporting details, identifying facts and comparing and contrasting. Writing Ask and answer questions about key details in a text. Write questions and answers. Math Solve subtraction number stories in multiple ways. The students will circle important numbers, underline words that give clues to the operation, choose more than one strategy to solve, write a subtraction number sentence and state the answer in a complete sentence when solving number stories. Math Games Subtraction Slide Social Studies/Science Researching and connecting families and cultures. Researching animals and how they survive in the wild. Library is every other week. Be considerate and act as good citizens. Practice flexible thinking and listening with your whole body to show that you care. Remember being part of the group is rewarding. Sharing Experiences!
