many great things happening! Read on to

We are so excited for this year!

Reading & Writing
Students have been exposed to many
complex texts including Stellaluna by Janell
Cannon and Dragons and Giants, a short
story from Frog and Toad Together by Arnold
Lobel. The students will continue studying
non-fiction with reading Elephants and Their
Calves by Margaret Hall and What Do You Do
With A Tail Like This by Steve Jenkins and
Robin Page. The class will create a question
and answer book that culminates their
understanding of facts, opinions and
knowledge of reading and asking questions
about what they read. Students will show
understanding of how text and graphic
features help them learn more about what
they are reading.
The students will be developing their writing
skills by improving basic sentence writing
conventions: capitalization, structure,
punctuation and spelling.
REMEMBER:GOOD READERS READ EVERY DAY &
GOOD WRITERS WRITE EVERY DAY!
Math
“Helping students learn is the end
goal of New York City public
schools. We are committed to
providing students a solid education
so they can go to college; get good
jobs; and lead productive, successful
lives.”
For the second chapter in math we will be
focusing on the CCLS Operations and
Algebraic Thinking. The students will be
developing their understanding of subtraction,
and strategies for subtracting within 20.
We will provide practice counting back using
models with manipulatives. This visual
representation of taking from numbers will
expand each child’s knowledge of subtraction
strategies.
Remember to use flash cards to practice easy
subtraction facts within 10.
Thank you, parents, for your continued support and cooperation in helping make your child’s
school experience a success!
