When he took his test, he failed. John did not bother with any further lessons. Motivation Adam works because he has to pay his mortgage and feed himself and his family. He gets no satisfaction from his job and there is no chance of promotion. Adam’s motivator to work is money. Motivation Sally has enough money put away that she does not need to work, but she works because she loves what she does, she gets enormous satisfaction and selffulfilment from her work. Self-esteem Self esteem is the degree to which you value and appreciate yourself, it's your self worth. People's perceptions of you as an individual will be based on what you think about yourself and how you behave. Self-esteem People with high self esteem generally have a positive mental attitude, have high self worth and are confident in their abilities and who they are. People with low self esteem generally have a negative mental attitude, put themselves down, criticise themselves and their abilities. Personal Strengths It’s important to know what are your personal strengths: • to give you self confidence • to help you to identify what kind of work would suit you • to be able to “sell” yourself to possible employers. Personal Achievements But I haven’t really achieved anything…. Personal Achievements Achievements are things you’ve done that you are proud of and can include: • • • • • • • • arranging events awards from work or school raising children or caring for others sports achievements having many friends playing a musical instrument passing your driving test dealing with a difficult time or situation. Achievements – Skills and Strengths I set up a fund raising stall for children in need and got help from family and friends who baked cakes and sweets so that I raised a total of £250. Shows: • initiative • motivation • communication • team player • customer focus • knowledge of finances. Achievements – Skills and Strengths Each morning I get my three children up, dressed, fed and ensure they have everything they need for school. Then I drop them off on time at two different schools. Shows: • planning and organising • timekeeping and meeting deadlines • adaptability/flexibility • resilience • persuading and influencing. Achievements – Skills and Strengths When learning to drive I was passed from instructor to instructor and had countless lessons and tests. After 8 years of trying I passed my driving test. Shows: • commitment • motivation • adaptability/flexibility • resilience. Transferable Skills Transferable skills are things that you can do that can be applied in different situations and circumstances. Showing motivation to achieve your personal goal of learning to drive shows an employer that you have a positive attitude and can set and achieve goals. Action Plan What do you want to achieve? • To get up early on weekdays and job search. How will you achieve it? • Set my alarm for 8:30. Go to the jobcentre and hand out CVs in town.
