Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Associate Provost, the Manager, UOIT ESL, Ensures the efficient and
effective operation of the academic function of the university’s ESL school. The position manages a
team of teaching (ESL) professionals, and is accountable for providing an excellent level of student
service. The position manages the teaching and learning aspects of UOIT ESL and directs a team of
instructors in the implementation and delivery of all ESL programs. The manager develops and
overseas the academic program including core curricula, tests and assessments, and student and
teacher evaluations. The Manager works closely with the Registrar’s office to ensure enrolment in
UOIT ESL, and subsequent matriculation to UOIT undergraduate programs are managed effectively.
Reporting to the Associate Provost, the Manager is responsible for the operation of the university’s
ESL programming. The Manager is accountable for providing team leadership in preparing fully
students for academic success in programs where the language of instruction is English. The
Manager must be fully aware of trends within ESL programming, including modes of delivery,
curriculum and assessment. The position leads a team of ESL teachers in delivering curriculum to a
wide range of students from various language backgrounds, and with various levels of English
proficiency. The Manager monitors best practices with respect to ESL delivery, and student success
and is fully aware of the preparation necessary for success in UOIT’s degree programs. This position
has 4-5 direct reports and numerous contract and sessional employees.
Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
Student Management







Advise students regarding classes, programs, schedules and academic goals, and place
students accordingly
Manage student attendance, grade reports and statistics, and ensure that student files are
accurately maintained as per university guidelines
Schedule classes to meet the needs of the school and develop/open classes to meet the
needs of potential students and other university priorities
Ensure the effective implementation of the academic program and develop content as
necessary to address student and enrolment demands
Maintain strong optimal class sizes and develop retention and success programing for
students
Establish policies and procedures for student integration and success
Develop and implement student orientation sessions, and oversee the planning and
implementation of graduation, and transfer to undergraduate study

Liaise internally, with the university’s academic and administrative departments.
Teacher Management








Responsible for recruitment, selection, orientation, supervision, development and evaluation of
TESL and advising staff.
Develop career plans for instructors in accordance with their experience and expertise, as well
as developing professional development tracks for all staff
Supervise the overall delivery and effectiveness of teaching staff, and ensure that all staff meet
university standards with respect to curriculum, program delivery, and student development
Monitor classroom instruction and ensure instructors update and build upon classroom
material and/or curriculum
Ensure that the academic materials meet the standards and requirements of the university
Develop departmental goals and measurements to ensure efficient and effective departmental
performance; responsible for the academic quality of the primary and secondary academic
material
Lead teacher training and development, including classroom observations, feedback and
appraisals
Provide leadership to instructors, motivating staff to participate in the university’s objectives
and continuously keep staff informed of changes or new directions
Administrative Management





Responsible for the day-to-day management and operation of the ESL teaching and learning
team, including the overall excellence of the academic program
Enforce policies and develop motivational standards for the staff by coordinating the
development of programs of study, course descriptions, course syllabi, class schedules,
selection and timely acquisition of textbooks and related academic equipment and supplies,
and ensure there are adequate faculty and facilities to accommodate the needs of the students
Oversee the advising staff who handle student academic progression, and success, and other
students services staff members.
Contribute to the strategic planning process, recommending short and long-term training
plans/objectives of UOIT ESL
Encourage business growth through liaisons with external agencies such as government,
corporate, and community organizations
Required Skills:

Demonstrated knowledge of English Language Education

implementing new strategies and procedures

Required Experience:

Several years of experience in the areas of English education, and staff management
Required Education:
An undergraduate degree in a related discipline (English, Applied Linguistics etc.), a Master’s
degree is strongly preferred.
 A certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)
