PURPOSE
Baptist Theological Seminary, Eku is both an academic and spiritual institution,
providing excellent Christian theological education and professional training for those
called by God to help meet the need for effective God-fearing leadership in churches,
schools and denominations. The Seminary provides the atmosphere and time for spiritual
life to take root in the students before they are placed in the full blaze of the intellectual
problems and actual difficulties of the time in which we live. Students are drawn by their
spiritual hunger and desire to serve God. The Seminary offers curricula in the areas of
Theology, Religious Education and Christian Music. These programmes of study are
designed to offer a comprehensive
professional education for qualified students who
give evidence of a divine call to Christian ministry.
3
BACKGROUND HISTORY OF THE SEMINARY.
The first proposal to establish a Theology school in the Niger Delta area of the
Convention was made by Dr. & Mrs. W.H. Carson in 1937. As they were interested in
training Nigerian leaders, they “dreamt” of establishing a Theological School in Addition
to the several workers’ Conferences they had organized.
On September 7, 1937 to be precise, Dr. Carson reduced his dream into writing and I
quote him inter-alia:
Got a dream when I thought about how Government gave
C.M.S. Big Schools and Grounds, why not give grounds
for a Theological School? They have some that they do
not need. Hope to pray for some such plan for training
workers.
Although the Carsons were at Eku on the day they thought of establishing a Theological
School, their references to C.M.S. Schools and grounds were to Sapele, where they had
earlier visited and worked. However, their plan was not actualized immediately.
In 1945, the Carsons moved to Port Harcourt, and in that same year, their dream of
Theological School came to fruition. They established the School in Port Harcourt, and
the Rev. A.M. Udjor of Erho, Abraka, was one of the first students who attended the first
six months Theological training.
When Dr. W.H. Carson died on May 20, 1954 the school was moved to Eku in 1956. But
since the availability of missionaries determined the location of the school at that time,
the school was later moved to Benin City where Rev. O.C. Robinson was resident. Rev.
O.C. Robinson, thus became the head of the institution in Benin City from 1956-1958.
On February 1, 1958 the School moved back to Eku, and was located in the Baptist
Hospital, Eku, under the headship of Rev. (Dr.) J.B. Gauntley, when O.C. Robinson went
on furlough.
On his return in 1959, Rev. O.C. Robinson resumed his principal ship of the Bible School
in Benin City. In 1960, the Bible School returned to Eku, but when the Gauntleys went
on furlough in 1960, the Bible School moved to Warri under the headship of Rev. G.E.
Robinson and when the Robinsons were to retire in 1965, the school was moved again to
Eku and since then, the Bible College as the Institution was then known, has remained
permanently in Eku, with Revs. U. Green; Hurst; D. Z. Reece, L.G. Legg as principals
from 1965 to 1972 when Rev. P.E. Ofuoku became the Acting Principal.
By 1980, Rev. P.E. Ofuoku, who had become the substantive Principal, sited the
Institution on its permanent ground where it situates today. When Rev. P.E. Ofuoku
retired, Rev. A.I. Ifukor was appointed acting Principal in 1996 and he served in this
capacity till 1999. In 1999, a substantive Rector in the person of Rev. G.O. Anie was
4
appointed and he served till 2007 as the President of the Institution, before he was
appointed as the A.G.S. Ministerial of the Nigerian Baptist Convention. Rev Dr. Moses
O. Oladeji was appointed as the Acting President of the Seminary, who served from June,
2007 to June, 2008. Dr. GF. N. Aghawenu became the Acting President of the Seminary
in July 2008 and his appointment was ratified as the substantive President in April 2009.
Since inception, the Seminary has been offering course at Certificate level until the
1994/1995 academic session when it was accredited to award Diploma in Theology, and
the first Diploma Class graduated in May 1997. In September, 1999, the Ministerial
Training Board of the Nigerian Baptist Convention formally accredited the institution to
award Bachelor of Theology Degree. History was made when on May 26, 2001 the First
sets of Degree Students graduated with Bachelor of Theology.
On August 5th, 2004, the Nigerian Baptist Convention Executive Committee officially
approved the proposal to upgrade from the Baptist College of Theology to a Seminary.
That decision was ratified on April 21, 2005, during the 92nd Convention Session at
Ogbomoso where the General Secretary Rev. Dr. S.A. Ishola, formally declared that “The
third Seminary of the Nigerian Baptist Convention is the Baptist Theological Seminary,
Eku.” Following that pronouncement, the Seminary was inaugurated on May 27, 2006 by
the General Secretary of the Nigerian Baptist Convention. In the year 2012, the seminary
achieved another milestone when she got accreditation to award Master of Divinity in
Theology and Religious Education to the glory of God.
OUR VISION
Our vision, in the first instance is to continue to train spiritually and academically mature
personnel that will provide leadership for Churches and Schools of the Nigerian Baptist
Convention and the nation at large. Secondly, now that the school has been upgraded to a
Seminary Status, we are to move on to a graduate level of studies God willing, in a few
years time. In the light of the above vision, expansion in terms of infrastructure and
adequate facilities are our priorities. We therefore, call on the Convention, Conference
and good-spirited individuals to join us in our development strategy for the overall
improvement of the facilities on ground.
