The multi-year Block IV contract issued to Electric Boat and its industry teammate Newport News Shipbuilding provides construction of 10 additional Virginia-class submarines. Virginia-class submarines are designed from the keel up for the full range of 21st century mission requirements, including antisubmarine and surface ship warfare and special operations support. Sargent has specialized in technology for hydraulic components in critical applications such as submarines for more than 60 years. “The Block IV contract issued to Sargent will provide production deliveries into early 2019,” said Christopher Petersen, Plant Manager at Sargent Aerospace & Defense. “Securing this contract is critical to Sargent and demonstrates the continued commitment of our employees in support of the war fighter and our nation’s security.” Virginia-class submarines displace 7,800 tons, with a hull length of 377 feet and a diameter of 34 feet. They are capable of speeds in excess of 25 knots and can dive to a depth greater than 800 feet, while carrying Mark 48 advanced capability torpedoes, Tomahawk land-attack missiles and unmanned underwater vehicles. Sargent’s customers, Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding, have already delivered 11 Virginiaclass submarines to the Navy: USS Virginia (SSN774), USS Texas (SSN775), USS Hawaii (SSN776), USS North Carolina (SSN777), USS New Hampshire (SSN778), USS New Mexico (SSN779), USS Missouri (SSN780), USS California (SSN781), USS Mississippi (SSN782), USS Minnesota (SSN783) and USS North Dakota (SSN 784).
