ART TALK
HOW THE HAWAIIAN
ISLANDS FORMED
“TEACHING GEOLOGY THROUGH THE ARTS”
Featuring Artist: G. Brad Lewis
By: Chelsea Daley
Talk and Turn
• How do you think the Hawaiian Islands formed?
• List two places you may have gathered this information.
How the Hawaiian Islands Formed
• The earths crust is made up of tectonic plates.
• Sometimes, when two plates come together it forms a
volcano.
How the Hawaiian Islands Formed
• Volcanoes can also form in the middle of tectonic plates.
The magma can rise above the tectonic plate and erupt at
the sea floor. This is known as a “Hot Spot”.
How the Hawaiian Islands Formed
• The Hawaiian islands were formed by a hot spot. As the
tectonic plates moved over the hot spot, the Hawaiian
Island chain was then made.
Turn and Talk
• Why would you want to take photos of a volcano?
• What features of the volcano would you want to
photograph? (Make a list with your partner)
G. Brad Lewis
• Born and raised in Utah and Alaska
• Moved to Big Island of Hawaii in 1982
• Went for a 2 week vacation, that turned into a lifelong
living experience.
• Once the Kilauea Volcano erupted when he was there in
1982, he knew that he was hooked on photography.
Influence On His Work
• The stunning views
• Every photograph is different because lava flows in every
direction.
• Beauty of nature
• Power of these volcanoes
• Especially Kilauea
• Can anyone guess why it would be dangerous
to photograph an erupting volcano?
Dangers to Lewis’s Work
• When the hot lava goes into the ocean, the land around
the ocean can collapse off the coast. (Sometimes as big
as a football field!!!)
• When the hot lava enters the cold ocean, it creates steam
and sulphuric acid. This steam acts as acid rain and can
dissolve your clothes.
• Lava is so hot it can melt the rubber of your boots
• Sometimes Lewis needs to wear a respirator mask
around his nose and mouth because of the acid rain. It
can cause respiratory problems.

In addition to meets expectations, provide evidence of how you think you exceeded the expectations for this project:
I finished my art talk the day after we talked about it. I also taught it the week after I finished. I believe I went above
and beyond because I am still teaching about Brad Lewis. I have contacted him for my students and am still doing
lessons on him. 
