As a collegiate university Oxford's structure can be confusing to those unfamiliar with it. The university is essentially a federation: it comprises over forty self-governing colleges and halls, along with a central University headed by the Vice-Chancellor. Students are members of both a College and of the University •30 colleges and 7 halls undergraduate and graduate degrees •7 colleges graduates only •1 college (All Souls) fellows only •1 college ( Kellog) part-time graduate and continuing education Collegiate system Large internationally-renowned institution Small interdisciplinary academic community Central governance Chancellor titular figure, holds office until death Vice-Chancellor de facto head of the University, holds office for up to seven years Pro-Vice-Chancellors Education Research Planning and Resources Development and External Affairs Personnel and Equal Opportunities Central governance Council of the University (26 members) executive policy-making body Vice-Chancellor, heads of departments, members elected by Congregation, representatives of the Colleges, 4 members from outside the University Major committees Educational Policy and Standards General Purposes Personnel Planning and Resource Allocation Congregation: legislative matters Over 4000 members of the academic and administrative staff UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD ACADEMIC DIVISIONS Humanities Mathematical, Physical & Life Sciences Medical Sciences Social Sciences UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD Humanities Division units American Institute Classics Faculty English Language and Literature History Faculty Linguistics & Phonetics Medieval and Modern Languages Faculty Music Faculty Oriental Studies Faculty Philosophy Faculty Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art Theology Faculty Voltaire Foundation UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD Mathematical, Physical & Life Sciences Division units Chemistry Computing Laboratory Earth Sciences Engineering Science E-Research Centre Materials Mathematical Institute Physics Plant Sciences Statistics Zoology UNIVERSITY OF OXFORD Social Sciences Division units Anthropology and Museum Ethnography School of Archaeology Economics Educational Studies Environment, Centre for the Faculty of Law Management (Said Business School) Oxford Internet Institute Politics and International Relations Queen Elizabeth House, Department of International Development Social Policy and Social Work Sociology Medical Sciences Division units Anaesthetics Biochemistry Cardiovascular Medicine Clinical Laboratory Sciences Clinical Medicine, Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurology Clinical Pharmacology Clinical Vaccinology and Tropical Medicine Experimental Psychology Medical Oncology Molecular Medicine, Weatheral Institute of Obstetrics & Gynaecology Ophthalmology Orthopaedic Surgery Paediatrics, Department of Pathogen Research, The Peter Medawar Building for Pathology Pharmacology Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics, Department of Psychiatry Public Health Radiation, Oncology and Biology Surgery Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine Department sub-units Division of Structural biology, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Physiology, Human Genetics, Wellcome Trust Centre for Medical Oncology, Clinical Trial Service Unit, Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology & Metabolism, Structural Genomics Consortium, NDM John Radcliffe Research Units Bioinformatics, CD45 group, Cellular Immunology, Cancer Research Epidemiology Unit, Clinical Immunology, Cutaneous Immunology, Geratology, Gastroenterology, Human Immunology, Magpie Trials, Molecular Immunology, Molecular Parasitology Group, Palliative Care, The Nephrology Oxygen Sensing Group, Respiratory Medicine, Rheumatology, T-cell Biology Group, The Peter Medawar HIV/AIDS Laboratory, Clinical BioManufacturing Facility, Tropical Medicine, Viral Immunology Group, Human Chronic Viruses Academic departments •located centrally within the structure •not affiliated to any particular college •perform research •provide facilities for teaching and research •organise lectures and seminars •determine the syllabi and guidelines for the teaching of students •Colleges organise the tutorial teaching for their undergraduates. •The members of an academic department are spread around many colleges. •Though certain colleges do have subject strengths they are the exception, and most colleges will have a broad mix of academics and students from a diverse range of subjects. 39 Colleges + 7 Halls •independent and self-governing •core element of the university •related in a federal system •governed by a Head of House and a Governing Body Trinity College • founded in 1554, is one of the smaller colleges in terms of student numbers, but occupies an exceptionally spacious site in the centre of Oxford. The relationship between undergraduates and the academic staff is open and friendly. Excellent facilities and a strong sense of community provide an ideal environment for hard work and academic achievement. • A wide range of clubs and societies with an academic focus are active within Trinity as well as sports and music clubs, including a large chamber orchestra. Facilities such as libraries are provided on all these levels: by the central university, by the departments and by colleges (all of which maintain a multi-discipline library for the use of their members).
