Aims:
Learning psychological factors connected with establishing appropriate contact with the patient; styles of constructive
communication and communication barriers, as well as learning how to use the acquired knowledge in the therapy of
the patients. Presenting the model of behavioural changes involving the patients’ health and the principles of
conducting a clinician’s interview motivating the patients to reinforcing the patient’s pro-health attitude.
Analyzing the impact of stress and its long-term effects on human organism and discussing psychosomatic
diseases. Acquiring the knowledge of mental disorders and the specificity of working with a psychiatric
patient during treatment.
Understanding the role of: psychosocial resources in the process of coping with illness and preserving
psychophysical wellbeing; holistic model of health and illness in medicine; professional burnout and
psychological crisis in life.
Matrix of learning outcomes for the module/course in reference to the methods of verifying the intended

Comments
Course contents:
1. Psychology as a human science. Psychology in medicine – basic assumptions.
2. Various concepts of psychological health and norms in clinical psychology. Psychosocial bases of
pathology.
3. The characteristics of selected mental disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder. The
specificity of establishing contact with the mentally ill patient, mentally impaired patient, patients with
anxiety disorders, patients with organic brain damage.
4. Developmental psychology.
5. Psychosocial factors of health, illness and the quality of life, including chronic illness and disability.
6. Various forms and kinds of violence, including domestic violence and its medical, psychological and
social consequences.

7. Stress and health. Biological and psychological mechanisms of stress. The impact of long-time stress on
health – psychosomatic dependencies. Stress and working as a doctor. Reasons and effects of excessive
stress and methods of coping with stress-inducing situations.
8. Adaptation and mechanisms of coping with difficult situation (e.g. experiencing pain, fear of medical
procedure, life crisis).
9. Professional burnout syndrome in the medical profession.
10. Psychological issues in doctor – adult patient/child/patient’s family relations. How to establish and
sustain relations with the patient? Principles of establishing appropriate contact with the patient. Iatrogenic
errors.
11. Stages in changing health behaviours. Methods of enhancing the sense of efficiency when it comes to
introducing changes in the patient’s behaviour. How to instigate and sustain the patient’s motivation to
change lifestyle.
12. Self-destructive behaviour in various age groups (drug addiction, self-harm, suicide) – causes,
occurrence, clinical picture, prophylactics.
13. What is addiction to psychoactive substances? Clinical picture of an addicted person. Mechanisms and
phases of addiction to alcohol. Effects of the excessive use of psychoactive substances.
