Dear Parents, March 28th, 2014 We are excited to be releasing our baby Coho Salmon on May 12th this year. However only 30 spots are available for the field trip and we would like to offer students a unique opportunity to earn a spot. Students will be working on an essay that has this prompt: How are the survival of the salmon of the Puget Sound and the people of the Puget Sound linked? Students will have some class time to work on this assignment, but working at home is also recommended. The essay will need to be 5-6 paragraphs, typed, double spaced and give no indication as to the identity of the student except student ID in the upper right hand corner. The top 30 essays will be selected by a committee of volunteer readers. Once the winners are announced field trip permission slips will be sent home along with details for the release day. Timeline: March 27th—students meet with Mrs. McCully to review research card procedures and receive the prompt. *Two in-class dates where students can type up essays will be made available ** Students are encouraged to have a thumb drive to store essays *** Students can hand write rough drafts in science notebooks and type on days when laptops are available if no computers are available at home April 7-11 Students can work on essay over Spring Break April 25th____ typed essays due to box in office The essay will be scored for science but that due date will be in early May. Only students that want to be considered for the field trip must be finished by 4/25. We do need volunteers for reading the essays, but if you volunteer we ask that you don’t read your own child’s essay before the due date so we can as impartial as possible.
