• A majority use thin clients at their presses they are
working on
• Engineers that use CAD level workstations and software
• Financial department uses their Workday software and
the data center to store their data
• People Services (Human Resources) use their Kronos
software to store their data
• The Computing Infrastructure group uses their tools to
maintain the information system and the data center

HOW THEIR IT WORKS
Does the enterprise have in-house information system
people, sub-contractors, or a combination of the two that
maintain their information system? What is the reason?
• 95% is in-house information system employees that
maintain and work with the information system
• 5% is contracted out for when they have big projects
• E.g. they recently had a cut-over from Novell GroupWise to
Microsoft Exchange for an e-mail server
• There is a company that provide the WAN that Phillips
uses to connect all of their facilities in Wisconsin

Information Systems Change Process
• Phillips Plastics Corporation has a group in the
change process that it has to go though. The group
consists of the CIO of Arnie Dewitt, then it goes to
the 3 managers within the IT department to talk
about whether the change should happen or not.

What types of networks support the business
information system of the enterprise?
• Star Topology
• LAN's to connect in building by twisted pair
• WAN's to connecting their facilities by T1 or mostly fiber-wire
• All the networking equipment is Cisco based
• Only a few Web Applications are used
• Microsoft Web App for people to view their e-mails

VALUE OF THE INFORMATION
Is the information system generating the right information
for value-added business process or by a goal orientated
decision-maker?
• Yes, the information system and the Oracle database
helps generate the information to get from the engineers
to the presses to create the products they sell
• The financial side of things creates reports to let them
know the spending reports
• People Services gets information generated from payroll,
hiring information and everything in between
• When a People Services employee wants that information they
can get it now

INFORMATION SYSTEM PROBLEMS
What primary problems/opportunities might a new or
enhanced information system solve?
• The hard drive space on their Novell servers are
running out of space and crash because of that
• The Helpdesk Software still pull information from
eDirectory/Novell instead of AD-Windows
• Because of that there are problems with asset tags and
remote control

SCALABILITY
Is the information system scalable?
• Yes, the information system at Phillips Plastics can be
changed with different servers if needed.
• Adding servers where they need to be is possible
• The servers are hot swappable with power supplies
and hard drives

RISKS
What are the identifiable risks of/or related to the
information system and potential impacts of the risks
to the enterprise?
• Some risks they listed to us were some of these, but
not limited to:
• Users telling information to other people outside of work
• Security hacks from the outside world
• A disaster such as a tornado came through and took out
where their data center is
• Some of their servers are getting really old that they crash,
so need more backup
