Combating Plagiarism • Find your school’s Electronic Resource/Use Policy-and READ it. • Find your school’s Academic Honesty Policy- and READ it. • Require your students to READ these policies. Why? Combating Plagiarism /2 • Use your syllabus to establish the “no tolerance” policy • Use the student’s emails to you to establish a sense of responsibility on their part • Don’t be afraid to discuss that you know ‘how’ they cheat; (that you’re not as dumb as they think you are?) Sample Syllabus Statement • Plagiarism/cheating will result in the following: A ‘0’ on the assignment, and/or failure in the course, and may also cause you to be removed from the college. You must read the Academic Honesty Policy and send me an email stating you understand the policy and will abide by its contents. I will use turnitin.com to check all work submitted. Sample Student Emails As a way to check role at the start of class have students email you the following: • I have read and understand the Academic Honesty Policy and will abide by its contents. • I have read and understand the Electronic Resource/Use Policy and will abide by its contents. Sample Responses Student ENG1A Feb 5th Assignment What I have read on the policies and the syllabus There are many information that we should read and understand. The most important thing in the provisions is all members of the college community must follow the policies. Basically, we need to act conscientiously all the time. There are several examples of prohibited conducts; plagiarism, unauthorized assistance, lying, tampering, and bribery. The objective of this course is to help students to improve their English ability so we need to work as hard as we can. Students must turn in assignments until the dead line. We are required to post comments at least once a week. Two books are necessary to attend class; “The bluest eyes” and “The Bedford guide for college writers.” Torturing is available for every student in the library. All students need to understand those polices and have responsibility for their act. I have also read the cousre syllabus and understand the objectives and dedication needed for this course. I look forward to this semester and hopefully this class will help me to be better in English as a writer and reader. Where Do They Go? Students are going to: • Online Cliff Notes: Spark Notes / Pink Monkey / Free Book Notes / Others? • Each Other – Sometimes Cultural Issues? • Purchased Papers—require and check links • They share each other’s passwords Sample Site • http://www.sparknotes.com/lit/bluesteye/section2. rhtml • Help | Log in | Sign Up for a Free Account Home : English : Literature Study Guides : The Bluest Eye : Autumn: Chapter 1 Autumn: Chapter 1 Summary • Analysis Use Search Engine • When in doubt some use search engines to check sections. – http://www.google.com/ – http://www.ask.com/ – http://www.yahoo.com/ Doesn’t work for me… Cheating • How do you know? • Colloquial vs. Stylized • Student-speak vs. Critique • Discussion Board Postings, Journals, and Papers Discussion Board Example • In some of these poorer countries, families sell their children to owners of sweat-shops for an amount of money so they can provide for the rest of the family. Other families just have their children working in the sweat-shops and the owners pay the families for their child’s labor in food, money or protection. Just like in the sweat-shop business, some families don’t sell their daughters, they just “loan” them to the gentlemen so they can get money to provide for the family at their daughter’s expense. I can’t begin to imagine what must be going through these children’s heads as they do this work, but I guess if you’re born into it and do it as soon as you are old enough it just seems like the right thing to do because you don’t know any better. Stylized Example • Morrison most notably uses the cultural icon of Shirley Temple (a hugely popular child actress of the day) and the popular children’s dolls of the 1940s to illustrate mass culture’s influence on young black girls. When Claudia states that, unlike Frieda, she has not reached the point in her psychological “development” when her hatred of Shirley Temple and dolls will turn to love, the irony of the statement is clear. Claudia naïvely assumes that the beauty others see in the doll must inhere physically inside it, and so she takes apart the doll to search for its beauty. Not a problem Ms. Mendez, we do not have to meet. I had hoped to have a quality discussion with you, but I can see that it is not necessary. I have attached the following: your Blackboard posting for Pages 1-32 of The Bluest Eye; the SparkNotes web site with the exact sections highlighted that from which you plagiarized for your posting; • your posting for Maya Angelou's GRADUATION that clearly has the same stylized language as the SparkNotes analysis (although it may not have come from that site); • the English 1A Syllabus with the Academic Honesty Policy highlighted; and • your email from 3/28/04 at 2:23pm stating that you accept and agree to the Academic Honesty Policy. I am dropping you from this course. Ms. Kincade What Are The Rules? • The rules for plagiarism at your college should be the same for online as they are for f2f! • Make sure you know what they are. • Make sure you have a No Tolerance Policy. • Make sure your students Know the Policy. And There’s More! • Create an online environment that allows you to “know your students.” You can do this by incorporating the following: –Discussion Boards –Short Answer Essay –Homework Assignments And More… • Know your students are using their text books when taking an exam • Create or use large test pools in your course management system—then randomize • Time your tests, keeping them at a one minute per question— allowing each question to open one at a time and no going back • Don’t allow your tests to be open for more than 48 hours: weeklong test windows are a big no-no • Check student time on tests– 25 minutes on one test and 3 minutes on the next for two students taking it at the same time tends to be a give-away Next Steps • Become Familiar with your Institution’s Electronic Resource /Use Policy & the Academic Honesty Policy • Become Familiar with the “Cheat Sites” – Free Book Notes: http://www.freebooknotes.com/ – Pink Monkey: http://www.pinkmonkey.com/ – Sparknotes: http://www.sparknotes.com/ • TELL your students you know— don’t sneak up on them • Become Familiar with your Course Management System and all its test tools, tracking features, and assessment options—then USE them • Keep an eye on what’s happening—know your students Plagiarism Sites & Articles • http://www.plagiarism.org/ • http://www.indiana.edu/~wts/pamphlets/plagiarism.shtml • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plagiarism • http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/589/01/ Fostering Academic Integrity in an Online Class ON TARGET: Haywood Community College’s Monthly Online Learning Newsletter Volume 1, Number 3 July 2006 by Marlowe Mager Coordinator of Distance Learning Haywood Community College Q&A Thank You!
