Music Multi genre by Kara Ingraham Journal Entry: October 13th, 2010 Today was absolutely miserable. I woke up late, threw on some baggy clothes, and got to school late, earning myself yet another citizenship U. I’m starting to feel sick- the whole day my head was throbbing. While I was walking to my car after school I tripped, and I think I sprained my ankle. I’m having one of those days where everyone and everything annoys me, and all I want to do is crawl back into bed and pull the covers over my head. The only good thing about today is that after school I went over to Lydia’s house, and she burned me three CD’s of new music! It’s almost too much for me to handle. After I got home, I spent about two more hours just putting the new music on my computer, and then transferring it to my iPod. It’s funny, but I think the new music made my day a whole lot better. What is it about belting your heart out to sad song that can make a person feel so much better when they’ve had a terrible day? Music really is one of the greatest forms of art. It’s so powerful, and now thanks to technology, once you own a song on a music playing device, you can listen to it virtually whenever and wherever you like. And, in my opinion, that makes the iPod one of the greatest modern inventions. I’d swear, nothing works better to make me forget all my worries and stress than listening to music while doing some sort of mindless labor, like cleaning my room or exercising. And now, I have nearly sixty more songs I can listen to, anytime, anywhere! You know, maybe today wasn’t so miserable after all. Music Multi genre by Kara Ingraham Letter of Complaint Dear Mother, I am writing to complain. Thanks to you, I know practically every other country song on the radio, despite the fact that I really dislike country music. I remember when I was little, and we were in the car, you’d turn on the radio and always play country. Or, in your room getting ready for some big date, you’d play a Kenny Chesney or something CD. Nowadays, if I’m in the car and for some terrible reason I accidently come upon a country song, there’s a good chance I’ll know the song, maybe even start to sing along! Do you know exactly how embarrassing that is? You only ever exposed me to country music when I was young, and that is my complaint. Please, help my little sisters by at least exposing them to different genres of music. Sincerely, Kara Music Multi genre by Kara Ingraham Dialogue between Caitee and I “Ugh, what is this?” “I have no idea, but change it. I don’t want that crap playing in my car.” “Understandable. Is it just me, or is a lot of music these days ….not good?” “It’s not just you. Music these days is so shallow. And even if some of it is kind of catchy, there’s nothing that lasts. Like nothing the next generation will look back at and think, ‘Wow, it must have been cool to live then’.” “That’s exactly what I mean! Whatever happened to bands like The Beatles, and Nirvana?” “I don’t know, but I love Nirvana.” “I do too! I practically worship them. My favorite song is ‘Heart-Shaped Box’.” “Mine too! I also love ‘Smells like Teen Spirit”. That one is such a classic.” “I know! If we end up moving in together for college, let’s please only listen to decent music like that?” “Deal.” Music Multi genre by Kara Ingraham Music I NEED to put on my iPod: Vegetable Car- Joshua Radin Hey oh! I celebrated my eleventh birthday about a month after the move. So there I was, this awkward gangly eleven year old Californian girl, in a completely new environment, with no friends; in fact, I barely knew anyone at all. So at this awkward stage in my life, I had to find some new ways to combat boredom and escape the stress of moving. I’d always liked music, and ever since I can remember I’ve been like my mom in the way that I only need to hear a song a few times before I have the lyrics nearly memorized. So I know that when I was younger I knew a few songs, but I didn’t yet have a real passion for music. My big sister, Chari, had always loved music. She’d spend hours and hours on the computer, finding new music. After the move to Utah, I began to sit with her, and listen to “her” music. Her taste in music, the rock and metal, was a lot different than the country my mother had always played in the car, but I found that I actually liked it better. Chari had a big influence on my taste in music. For the first time ever, I’d find myself on the computer for hours, just listening to and discovering new music. The summer before I started my first year of school in Utah is the first time I can remember really falling in love with music. A lot of people can be credited with introducing me to new bands and influencing my taste in music. Two people I specifically know influenced me music-wise were both ex-boyfriends. The first, named Jo, I dated my sophomore year of high school. Jo knew of a whole lot more music than I did, and he never failed to remind me of that. However annoying that may sound, he introduced me to a few new bands that I still listen to this day, so I have to be grateful to him in Music Multi genre by Kara Ingraham a way. Not only did he introduce me to some new bands, he had this passion for music that rubbed off on me. I’d already fallen in love with music, but to me it seems that each time you meet a person you can discuss music with, you fall in love with it all over again. The second boy who really had a big impact on my music love affair was George, who I dated my junior year of high school. It was obvious from the start that George and I had very similar tastes in music, and already appreciated a lot of the same bands and types of music. I still have yet to find someone I can spend as much time talking about nothing except music as I could with George. George was the one who first introduced me to a band that is now one of my all-time favorites, The Shins. After years of cultivating and expanding my own music collection, I can now proudly say that I have a taste in music that is all my own. I listen to music almost constantly, and have a passion for it that I might never have discovered if it weren’t for the people I mentioned before. Music plays a huge part in my life, and it is one thing that I know I could never live without. Music Multi genre by Kara Ingraham Wanted! New bands or musicians to play at your local Starbucks! Music Multi genre by Kara Ingraham Changing Music: Whatever Happened to The Ramones? By Kara Ingraham Ever wonder what happened to The Ramones, Led Zeppelin, or Black Sabbath? The answer is that bands like these are still out there being listened to by the youth of today, in some places. But the types of music that are emerging these days are genres never heard of before. What the heck is screamo? Or techno, or indie for that matter? We’re here to give you the answers to these questions. According to dictionary.com, screamo is defined as “a form of emo music typically featuring screaming vocals”. An example of this music would be a band named A Day to Remember. As for techno, it is “a style of disco music characterized by very fast synthesizer rhythms, heavy use of samples, and a lack of melody” and a band from this genre would be Basshunter. Indie music is categorized as anything that is from “an independent record company”. An example of an indie artist would be Local Natives. Chances are high that they will include listening to music in their list. Music is the one thing that ties everyone together; do you know anyone who doesn’t listen to music? This is because music is a form of art, one that has a genre for everyone. Personally, I can’t be without music- I listen to it while I get ready for the day, as I do my homework, and blast music in my car. In fact, just the other day there was a problem with my ca, and the mechanic advised me not to turn on my lights, heat, or radio if I wanted to get home without my car dying. I really tried, but I couldn’t resist turning the radio on. I figured it was worth the risk. Music plays such a big part in my life, and I intend to show how in this multi-genre paper.
