Lesson 085
Learning Goal: (You should be able to…)
apply trends, patterns and relationships of
subatomic particles in the periodic table
: (Can you …)
Solve the alien periodic table using what you know
about planet Earth’s periodic table?
In your binder or Lab note book ..
which ever is appropriate
lesson 085
Pattern recognition in the periodic table:
Complete the alien periodic table and questions.
This is a three day individual exercise.
Vocabulary for atomic structure and
periodic table part 2

shells or energy levels

Write To Think 085
1. WITHOUT looking at the periodic table
can you calculate the number of valence
electrons and the number of electron
shells of the type of atom that is in group
2 and period 4?
2. Use the periodic table to find or calculate
the atomic number and atomic mass and
the number of neutrons the type of atom
in question 1 has.
3. Draw a Bohr diagram for the type of atom
in question 1.

Apply your understanding of the
periodic table and sub atomic particles to a
TOP SECRET mission
Names on THREE sheets
Read the instructions sheet at least TWICE (5 min)
Skim read both Alien Periodic Table sheets, TOP SECRET
RADIOED DATA and the BLANK Planet G periodic table
The Challenge ON YOUR OWN: (To be assessed!!)
– Complete the Planet G periodic table using the data
provided AND your understanding of planet Earth’s
periodic table (use your notes etc.).
– Answer questions to verify your efforts.
– Might be prizes for the best, most accurate ones
along with strong answers. (NO PRIZES FOR BEING
FIRST!)
Checking for understanding
1.
2.
3.
4.
What is your role? Who are you representing?
What is your mission? What do you have to do?
What resources do you have?
What’s the same about the alien periodic table
and Earth’s periodic table?
5. What’s different about the alien periodic table
and Earth’s periodic table?
6. What other clarifying questions do you have?
Persistence, being stuck and asking
questions
• You really want to do this all by yourself, without any help from your
Scientific Liaison Officer (SLO) if at all possible.
• You can ask the Scientific Liaison Officer (SLO) questions.
• Clarification questions such as “Where do I write the answer?” will be
answered almost immediately.
• Scientific questions such as “is helium in group 2?” will need an alien
icon card to get and answer. The SLO will forward your question to
his/her supervisor and get back to you with an answer as soon as
possible.
• You only have two alien icon cards … so don’t ask a scientific question
unless you have checked all your resources several times and thought a
lot about it, tried everything else and are completely stuck.
• Your SLO will tell you what type of question you are asking and you can
then decide if you want to trade an alien icon card for an answer … or
not.

Take care … slow and precise: Methodical
Organized: Record what to do /what you’ve done
Logical
Compare information, Alien with Earth
Search for information
Seek accuracy
Triple checks
Self direction and time management
Persistence
Patience
Frustration control
Secret ‘clean up’
• NO TALKNG UNTILL ALL SECRET WORK FROM
EVERY ONE IS HANDED IN PLEASE
1. Place white instruction sheet on top
2. Yellow radioed alien data underneath
3. Your alien periodic table ‘solution’ on the bottom
• CAREFULLY paper clip all three together.
• Place in blue tray … NEATLY please!
• Keep your alien icon/queston cards in our binder
• Put your materials away.
