Newsletter 26 November 2015

I am very pleased to let you know that Sarah Cumming has been appointed as Deputy Principal.
Sarah is one of our current staff and is responsible for International and ESOL students. She has been
on study leave this year and has just completed her Master of Education degree with first class
honours. Sarah has worked as a teacher and senior teacher at Aranui Primary, in Auckland schools
and overseas in a number of international schools. She brings a breadth of experience and knowledge
to the Deputy Principal position.
Last Tuesday lunchtime we had our International Food Festival, which was a very relaxed, and
enjoyable community time. Our students and staff quickly devoured the delicious food from several
different countries. Thank you very much to our teachers Stephanie Hubbard, Lucy Watson and Fiona
Taylor and our lovely students for all their hard work, energy and enthusiasm for this great event.
I thoroughly enjoyed supporting our athletes at the Inter-Intermediate Athletics competition in
Ashburton this Tuesday. It was a very warm, windy day but all our students demonstrated outstanding
effort in every race and supported each other with such enthusiasm. We are very proud of every one of
them. Many thanks to our parents/families who came along and supported the students. A big thank
you to Tim Evers, our Sports Coordinator for all his hard work and organisation and our teachers
Paula Dorè and Brett Smith for getting up extra early to support the squad.
We are rapidly approaching the end of the school year, and all the activities that go with our
celebration of another wonderful year at Heaton. We reserve these activities to the very last week of
the year and continue our normal teaching programme up until then. Along with this, our high
expectations of students’ dress, behaviour and organisation are particularly important to maintain. As
I have walked around the school this week in classrooms, the playground and at the end of the day I
have been very impressed with the way our students are continuing to maintain these high
expectations. There is a friendly, calm feel around the school, which is wonderful. You, our parents
and caregivers also play a big part in supporting our positive learning environment at Heaton, which is
much appreciated.

Christ’s College Year 7 Science Competition, Jarrad Brown
Congratulations to our Year 7 team who competed and gained 1st place at the recent Christ's College
Year 7 Science Competition.
Our team took part in three practical challenges in the areas of Chemistry, Physics and Biology.
Biology proved to be the most difficult challenge with the team having to find and identify stream
invertebrates. The team pulled back the points by identifying an unknown chemical in the Chemistry
lab and accurately estimated buoyancy during the Physics challenge to secure a narrow win overall.
Together with the winner's trophy, our students won a book, DVD and a digital microscope.
Our thanks to Christ's College for giving us the opportunity to participate in such a well run event.
More details of the competition can be found on the front page of the Christ's College

PTA Wine and Cheese Evening and Annual General Meeting
Monday, 15 February 2016, 7.00 p.m., Staffroom
All parents and caregivers are warmly invited to attend our Annual General Meeting to be held at 7.00
p.m. on Monday, 15 February in the Heaton Staffroom.
The PTA works in cooperation with the school providing assistance where we can. We are a volunteer,
non-profit organization. Joining us is a great opportunity to get to know more about the school, to
meet new people and form friendships. You can be involved as little or as much as you like, and you
don’t have to join the PTA to come along to our meetings or the AGM.
All welcome – Monday, 15 February, 7.00 p.m., Heaton Staffroom – see you there!
Peace Crane Project, Fiona Taylor
Last term, Art Extension and Art Club folded cranes for peace as part of the Armed with the Arts Peace
Crane Project. They invited every child in the world to fold an origami crane or dove, write and draw a
message of peace on it, then share it with friends or someone far away through their Peace Crane
Exchange. http://armedwiththearts.org/peace-crane-project/
Olivia and Emily folded their cranes before the dreadful events in Paris. We now send our cranes with
an even stronger message for peace.
Earlier another group of our students sent cranes to a school in Russia
Adam, Trinity, Ben and Nina
Abbey, Dawon, Caroline, Charlotte, Cate
In return a school in Smolenskoye, Russia sent us drawings and cranes. They also sent a link to their
school websites and to some videos about life at their school. http://smolkid.ucoz.ru/

them, please let me know. taylorf@heaton.school.nz
Circuit Street Parking
Please do not park on yellow lines while waiting to collect your child after school. We have been
contacted about this problem occurring, particularly in Circuit Street. This is creating dangerous areas
for our students when crossing the road. Thank you for your support with this.

As our school year is fast coming to a close, we would like to thank all the families who have kept their
school accounts up to date. But we ask families with outstanding balances to please pay these amounts
as soon as possible before 27 November 2015.
We do offer a number of ways for you to pay the monies owing on your child’s statement. These
include:
 Internet banking
 Automatic payments
 Cheque
 EFTPOS
 Credit card
 Cash
Please select the most convenient method of payment. The school bank account number is: ASB

problem with your account. A statement including the end of year activities will be emailed out in the
near future
McMurdo Station, Antarctica
On the 5 November,
Michelle
Brown,
Terry Palmer and
Carl Green came to
Heaton
Normal
Intermediate
School to talk to
Room 16 about
their
jobs
monitoring
the
output and human
impact
on
Antarctica
from
McMurdo Station,
Antarctica.
They do this by
collecting sediment
(dirt) samples from
the seabed under
the ice surrounding
Antarctica.
They
follow a GPS that
takes them to a place where they need to dig up a sample. If the place is not over the sea, but over dirt,
they simply dig it up. However, if the location is over water, they dig a huge hole into the ice. Then,
Terry Palmer dives down and collects sediment from the sea floor. They send the samples to labs in
Texas where they run tests to see what kinds of pollutants are in the sediment. The scientists also see if
pollution is affecting animals in Antarctica, such as: seals, fish, penguins and more. Michelle, and her
group, also explained to us how animals have adapted to survive the cold of Antarctica.
McMurdo Station is home to 1000 scientists from America. It is 3km away from New Zealand’s Scott
Base and they are allowed to socialise once a week. McMurdo station is like a small town with an ATM
machine, a cafeteria and lot's more. There are speed limits on the roads and scientists get in big
trouble if they don’t obey them.
It was very interesting to learn about the jobs and lives of the scientists in Antarctica. Two of the
students from Room 16 were able to dress up in some of the clothes that they have to wear in
Antarctica. It was a wonderful experience and we got all the answers to our questions.
They have a website if you would like more information on their

Heaton International Food Festival
Last Tuesday, the first ever Heaton
International Food Festival took place in
the hall quad. It was a fantastic day
thanks to all the students that
contributed.
The hall quad was decorated in lots of
different colours and flags. All the
stallholders had been to a number of
meetings, and had put a huge amount of
their time and effort into making their
bunting, the menus and preparing the
food. By Tuesday, we were all super
excited and nervous at the same time! It
turned out to be great fun. There were
many different countries involved with
the International Food Fest including:
Italy, France, America, New Zealand,
India, Fiji and many more.
We would all like to say a big thank you to Miss Hubbard, Miss Watson and Mrs Taylor, as we couldn’t
have done it without them putting their time and effort into helping us. Overall, it was a great day for
tasting different foods as well as presenting food from other cultures.
Next year, we are expecting even more stalls because it is an amazing experience to take part in. We
would highly recommend that the future Year 8 students and the new Year 7 students get fully
involved!
