INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS MAJOR (Bachelor or Arts Degree) ADVISING AND PRE-REGISTRATION INFORMATION SPRING 2013 GENERAL INFORMATION FOR INTA MAJORS: (B.A.) degree requirements: o Intermediate level language (up through 232) o Philosophy Course – Most philosophy courses* including GPHIL 101-as long as GPHIL 101 is not being used for Cluster Two Gen Ed *Exceptions: GPHIL 150 does not count toward this B.A. requirement. Students under Fall 2008-2009 catalog or later may not use GPHIL 120, either. MAJOR ADVISING: Please contact your major advisor if you have specific questions regarding spring registration or future schedule planning. You can locate your major advisor on your MyMadison account or from the POSC department office, Miller 2120. Please be vigilant in checking course sequencing and projected course availability as you approach completion of your program. RESEARCH METHODS (INTA 295) & SENIOR SEMINAR (INTA 489) Sequencing: MATH 220 is a prerequisite for INTA 295. INTA 295 (taken no later than second semester of your junior year) is a prerequisite for INTA 489, the senior seminar. These courses must be taken in separate semesters. There are no exceptions to this policy, so plan accordingly. Enrollment: No overrides are permitted into multiple sections of INTA 295 until all sections are full. This protects students from overcrowding & distributes the workload fairly among professors. In turn, enrollment in INTA 489 is by override only. If you are eligible to request a senior seminar, you will receive instructions in a separate e-mail message. Students will request seminars from 10/22/12 through 10/25/12. FOREIGN LANGUAGE FL 300 & 320 All INTA majors must complete course numbers 300 and 320 in their foreign language (comparative study track students with a language appropriate for the region.) Some languages offered at JMU may not use this course numbering—in this instance students must take two 300-level courses that focus on grammar, oral and written communication. The second 300-level course may not be a literature, cinema or civilization course. If you are uncertain about which 300-level courses satisfy this requirement, please check with your advisor. HIST 330 (U.S. Diplomatic History) While usually a fall semester class, HIST 330 will be offered this Spring 2013, and then return to the usual fall schedule. HIST 330 is required for students in the International Relations and optional for all other INTA majors. GEOG 375 (Political Geography) should be available to INTA students in spring 2013 during preregistration without the need for an override. All other GEOG courses are available to non-GEOG majors only after pre-registration is over. Internships: (POSC 495) may count towards the INTA major (3 credits max) with prior approval from Dr. Jon Keller, INTA major coordinator. Dr. Keller will determine whether and where the credits count given the nature of the internship. For qualifications, requirements and forms related to internship-forcredit see www.jmu.edu/polisci/internships.html. Students interested in participating in the Washington Semester’s Global Affairs program should save internship credit for that semester. HONORS THESIS (POSC 499A, B or C). Dr. Keller is the thesis coordinator and students should contact him as they begin the process. Honors thesis students must register for the honors colloquium (POSC 499A, B or C,) depending on the phase of the thesis project. Enrollment in these courses requires permission from the instructor. Prerequisites: Honors Program requirements, junior standing and a 3.25 GPA in the major. You must register for this course before the beginning of the semester. The colloquium is never offered as a block course. STUDY ABROAD/TRANSFER CREDIT APPROVAL. See department chair, Dr. Charles Blake (blakech@jmu.edu).
