Have you ever opened up a book and wondered how it got to how it is, with typed letters, and different chapters? Books have changed a lot through history, and I hope my photo essay has shown you how much they have. Before Johannes Gutenberg developed the printing press in the 1450’s, all books in Europe were handwritten, as were everywhere else in the world with the exception of China. The Chinese had a system of putting ink onto a wooden block, and then pressing it down onto paper, where it left an imprint on the page. Because almost every book in the world was handwritten, they were all holy books, such as Korans and Bibles. However, after the printing press was developed, many other books began to come out. The Bible was the first to be printed, and the original Bibles from the printing press are today called Gutenberg Bibles. After this, the first typewriters, and then computers were made, and people started typing stories on them. About a century later, electronic “paper”, or “e-paper” was developed, and kindles came into use for reading. I hope this essay helped you understand a little bit about the history of books, and why I chose to write my essay.
