Global Project- U.S. History 11
Dear Students:
One of the key points of studying History is to better understand the world in which we live. To aid in
this, one of your assignments for this semester is to do a project on an aspect of one of the following continents:
Africa or Asia.
Projects are worth 100 points, so I expect a polished and thorough job. Grading will be based on the
following: projects which are completed on time and in full according to the standards will be given full points.
Projects which are not up to the standards or deviate from the proposal we agree on will be worth less. You
must submit your proposal to me, outlining what you will be doing to me by Friday. Your project is due on
January 14th. Late projects will not be accepted.
Possible Project Ideas
Read and Discuss a Book:
Read and report on a book (novel or non-fiction) .The report will be an oral presentation, to your peers
talking about the book. It must contain a summary of the book, an explanation of what you learned from reading
it, and why you did or didn’t enjoy the book. All books must be checked with me first.
Plan a Trip:
Using Travelocity or other websites, plan a trip to a city, country, or region of one of the continents.
Your plan and report on it should be realistic and should include each of the following: your detailed travel
plans, a budget showing reasonable expenses, and sites you would visit when there, the weather you would
expect, a list of items you would bring, and health concerns you might encounter. In general the purpose of this
trip must be to learn about the location and its people. You must write or do a report on your trip plans in some
way. Examples are a poster, notebook, or travel video.
Music or Art:
Study music or art from some part of Asia or Africa. Prepare a written report, poster, or presentation to
the class on what you learned about the music or art.
Foods:
Learn about the diet and foods of a country. Prepare a presentation to the class about a country’s diet and
foods, including an example of a typical dish. If you choose this option, remember that the topic is the diet and
foods, cooking methods, table settings and manners, from that country. The food you share is only part of your
project.
Project of Your Choice:
Project ideas are not limited to those above. Others could involve the life story of a famous person, a
model of a house, study of an endangered animal, and so on. If you are interested in this option, your proposal
must be specific about your topic and how you would present it to the class.
Extra Notes:
You only need to make one project. Many of the projects conducted in the past received less than full
credit because they showed little effort. Remember, your project is worth the same as two test grades. If you
choose a food project, be sure to report on the whole diet and eating practices. If you use books or the internet,
for any project, you must cite your sources and you must do more than cut and paste from the internet. The
project must be in your own words and you must do more than cut and paste from the internet. Failure to do so
will result in reduced credit. All projects except models or houses must be submitted through
mybigcampus.com.
You must have a Works Cited Page in MLA format. Failure to do so will be seen as plagiarism
and you will receive a zero for the project.
You may not use Wikipedia as a source. This will result in reduced credit.
It’s likely that some kids in your class will visit, live in, work in, or serve their country somewhere in one
of these continents. I urge you to choose and independent project topic that’s both fun interesting to you.
