to make it work grammatically, use brackets to


Introduce a full-sentence quotation by using an


Use a full sentence of your own to introduce a full
sentence by the quoted author.

You must use a colon to introduce the quotation in
this case.

Capitalize the first letter of any complete sentence you
quote unless you introduce it with “that.”

marks, EXCEPT when a parenthetical reference
follows the quotation.

closing quotation mark.

If you quote all or part of a single line of verse, put it in
quotation marks within your text:


Berowne’s pyrotechnic line “Light, seeking light, doth light of light
beguile” is a text-book example of antanaclasis (1.1.77).
You may also incorporate two or three lines in the same
way, using a slash with a space on each side ( / ) to
separate them:

Claudius alludes to the story of Cain and Abel when describing his
crime: “It hath the primal eldest curse upon’t, / A brother’s murder”
(3.3.37-38).

block quotation format and bold the speaker’s name with a
colon
Macbeth attempts to play the friendly host when he tells Banquo:
