DO NOW Over the past few months you hopefully have learned about community, what is government, citizenship, rights and responsibilities, and government organization in Missouri and nationally. But what does the idea of “government” mean to you? Write at least one paragraph about what you think of when you think of government. Introduction to Foundations of Government Vocabulary In your notebook, write what you think the underlined words mean. • America is a state because all 50 states are organized under one government. • The federal government has more power than the state governments. • Canada does not want the United States tell it what to do because it has sovereignty. • Many in the United States are angry because they believe the social contract that had been in place has been destroyed. • Democracy – Because the United States is a democracy, it is important that we all vote in elections.
