1. IDENTIFYING ADVERB CLAUSES
I. Read this World Review Magazine (A) Interview with Dr. Milton Scope (B), a
professor of sociology and an expert in what makes happy families. There are 12 adverb
clauses. The first one is already underlined. Find and underline 11 more. Then identify
the clauses with one of these labels: time, place, reason, condition, or contrast.
World Review
What Makes a Happy Family?
A: Dr. Scope, just what does make a happy family?
B: There is a cliché that all happy families have some things in common. While this may be
trite, it is also true. {contrast}
A: Really? What are these things?
B: Well, in happy families, even though family members may argue, they have a basic
concern for each other. Since every person needs to know that somebody really cares for and
about him or her, this is perhaps the most important factor.
A: Is this caring enough to keep young people on the road to productive lives, and certainly
away from nonsocial behavior?
B: No. of course it’s not so simple, but…a person who feels connected to others is more likely
to act in socially acceptable ways.
A: So, is being connected to principal factor?
B: It is very important.
A: Tell us what else is important.
B: When family members support each other’s goals, the family feels united.
A: Give us an example.
B: Well, if a parent is hoping to be promoted at work, everybody is supportive and shows
interest. If a younger is trying to make the basketball team, the other family members show
encouragement and warmth.
A: What happens in times of trouble?
B: When one family member is having trouble, the others should exhibit concern and try to
help. Suppose, for example, that a family member has been fired from a job. This person may
suddenly feel totally worthless in society, although, of course, this is not true. In fact,
precisely because this person doesn’t have a job, he or she needs to feel values as a human
being.
A: So, is that the key word, valued?
B: I think it is. People need to feel valued, appreciated. They also need to feel secure among
the family members. They need to know that their families will always be there for them even
if they are irritable, depressed, ill, unemployed- or whatever.
A: Does the economic status of the family matter?
B: Of course, economic stability is a favorable. But happy families exist wherever you look,
in all economic strata. And unhappy families as well.
A: Well, thank you very much doctor. We certainly feel a little more enlightened than we did
before.
