SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES: Fire fighters should wear protective clothing including self-contained breathing apparatus. Use water spray to cool nearby containers and structures exposed to fire. Muriatic Acid – Exposure to heat may increase concentration of hydrogen chloride vapors. UNUSUAL FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS: Muriatic Acid – Will react with most metals to release flammable hydrogen gas which may accumulate in closed containers. Section V – Health Hazard Data EFFECTS OF OVEREXPOSURE: AIRBORNE EXPOSURE LIMITS: For undiluted MCA-SOL: -OSHA Permissible Exposure Unit (PEL): 1mg/m3 (TWA) –ACGIH Threshold Unit Value (TLV): 1 mg/m3 (TWA), 3 mg/m3 (STEL), A2 – suspected human carcinogen for undiluted MCA-SOL contained in strong inorganic mists. PRIMARY ROUTES OF ENTRY: Inhalation, swallowing, skin contact, and eye contact. ACUTE: Muriatic Acid: Vapors, mists and liquid extremely corrosive to nose, throat, mucous membranes, eyes, skin, tissue, and mouth. Brief to prolonged contact may result in bronchitis, pulmonary edema, chemical pneumonitis, irritation, coughing, chest pain tissue damage, permanent eye injury, blindness, tissue burns, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, collapse and possible death. Manganese Sulfate: Dusts may irritate eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Swallowing the dusts or solid may cause nausea, vomiting and gastrointestinal disturbances. CHRONIC: Muriatic Acid: May result in areas of destruction of skin tissues or primary irritant dermatitis. Similarly, inhalation of vapors or mists may cause varying degrees of damage to the affected tissues and also increase susceptibility to respiratory illness. Manganese Sulfate: Chronic manganese poisoning can result from excessive inhalation exposure to manganese dust and involves impairment of the central nervous system. Early symptoms include sluggishness, sleepiness and weakness in the legs. Advanced cases have shown fixed facial expression, spastic gait and falling. EMERGENCY AND FIRST AID PROCEDURES: INHALATION: Remove victim to fresh air. Give artificial respiration if not breathing, but never to an unconscious or convulsing person. Get prompt medical attention. EYE CONTACT: Immediately flush eyes for 30 minutes while holding eyelids open. Get immediate medical attention. SKIN CONTACT: Remove contaminated clothing and shoes; wash before reuse. Immediately flush skin with plenty of water for 30 minutes. Get medical attention for irritation and burns. INDESTION: If conscious, give lots of water. Do not give anything by mouth to an unconscious or convulsing person. Get medical attention. DATE: 1/18/2012 PAGE 3 OF 5 MCA-SOL Concentrate SECTION VI – REACTIVITY DATA STABILITY: Stable under ordinary conditions of use and storage. HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: Will not occur. CONDITIONS TO AVOID: Excessive heat (>100°C) and incompatibles. INCOMPATIBILITY (MATERIALS TO AVOID): Potassium chlorate, potassium perchlorate, potassium permanganate, sodium, lithium, bases, organic material, halogens, metal acetylides, oxides and hydrides, metals (yields hydrogen gas), strong oxidizing and reducing agents and many other reactive substances. HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: Reacts with carbonates to generate carbon dioxide gas, and with cyanides and sulfides to form poisonous hydrogen cyanide and hydrogen sulfide respectively. SECTION VII – SPILL OR LEAK PROCEDURES STEPS TO BE TAKEN IN CASE MATERIAL IS RELEASED OR SPILLED: Personnel with proper protective equipment should contain spill. For small spills or drips, mop or wipe up and dispose of in DOT-approved waste containers. For large spills, contain by diking with soil or other absorbent material and carefully neutralize with soda ash and lime. If soda ash is used, provide adequate ventilation to dissipate carbon dioxide gas. Keep non-neutralized material out of sewers, storm drains, surface waters and soil. WASTE DISPOSAL METHOD: Disposal is to be in accordance with all federal, state and local regulations. SECTION VIII – SPECIAL PROTECTION INFORMATION RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: NIOSH – Approved respirator. VENTILATION: Local exhaust as required to maintain vapor concentrations below permissible limits. PROTECTIVE GLOVES: Rubber gloves with gauntlets. EYE PROTECTION: Chemical splash goggle and full face shield. OTHER PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT: Acid Suit, safety shower, and eye wash fountain. SECTION IX – TOXICOLOGICAL INFORMATION TOXICOLOGICAL DATA: Oral rat LD50: 2140 mg/kg; inhalation rat LC50: 510 mg/m3/2H; standard Draize, eye rabbit, 250 µg (severe); investigated as a tumorigen, mutagen, reproductive effector (0.1N solution). CARCINOGENICITY: Cancer Status: The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified “strong inorganic acid mists” as a known human carcinogen, (IARC category 1). SECTION X – ECOLOGICAL INFORMATION ENVIRONMENTAL FATE: When released into the soil, this undiluted MCA-SOL may leach into groundwater. When released into the air, this material may be removed from the atmosphere to a moderate extent by dry deposition. ENVIRONMENTAL TOXITY: This undiluted MCA-SOL may be toxic to aquatic life. Revised Date: 1/18/2012 Page 4 of 5 MCA-SOL Concentrate SECTION – SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN IN HANDLING AND STORAGE: Store in a cool, dry, and well ventilated area. Vent container carefully, as needed, to relieve pressure. Keep container tightly closed when not in use. Do not use pressure to empty container. OTHER PRECAUTIONS: Wash thoroughly after handling. Do not get in eyes, on skin or clothing. Avoid breathing vapors. Keep containers closed. Use with adequate ventilation. DANGER!! CAUSES SEVERE BURNS TO SKIN AND EYES. REACTS VIOLENTLY WITH STRONG ALKALI. HARMFUL IF INHALED. SECTION – D.O.T.
