6/4/12 Rock Cycle 2 Objective: Students will be able to model the rest of the rock cycle using wax. Do Now: What will happen to the car when the hand is removed? 1. Describe which way the car will move. 2. Tell if there is acceleration (pos. or neg.) or constant speed. 3. Tell if the forces are balanced or unbalanced 2N 3N Speed, Balanced and Unbalanced Forces • • • • • • Velocity = distance / time Balanced forces are equal and opposite Unbalanced forces are not equal An object speeding up is positively accelerating An object slowing down is negatively accelerating An object going at a constant speed has balanced forces • An object accelerating (positively or negatively) has unbalanced forces • Friction is the force that acts in the opposite direction of a moving object and slows it down. Think/Pair/Share: • Friday we were able to turn a sedimentary rock into a metamorphic rock. How did we do this? • An igneous rock is a rock that forms from melted rock. • Write/Pair/Share: How could we turn the crayon “metamorphic rock” into an “igneous rock?” • Let’s Share!!!!! • Let’s all watch as I put an aluminum foil “boat” in hot water • Be ready to make at least 2 observations. 1. Draw the “igneous rock” and label it igneous rock. 2. How did we turn the wax “metamorphic rock” into an “igneous rock”? 3. How could a “metamorphic rock” turn into an igneous rock in real life? 4. How could we turn the wax “igneous rock” back into “sediments”? Vocabulary Box Igneous Rock Rock formed when melted rock (magma underground or lava above ground) cools and hardens. Rock Cycle Notes • Think/pair/share/write: 1. What are the three basic types of rock? • Igneous • Sedimentary • Metamorphic Rock Cycle Notes • Think/pair/share/write: 2. How are igneous rocks formed? • Igneous rocks are formed when melted rock cools and hardens. Rock Cycle Notes • Think/pair/share/write: 3. How are sedimentary rocks formed? • Sedimentary rocks are formed when rock is weathered into sediments and turned to rock by pressure and/or natural cementing. Rock Cycle Notes • Think/pair/share/write: 4. How are metamorphic rocks formed? • Metamorphic rocks are formed when heat and pressure changes a rock into a new type of rock. Rock Cycle Notes • Think/pair/share/write: 5. Is there a set order for how rocks change from one rock to another? • There is no set order in the rock cycle: any rock can turn into any other kind of rock, or into a different type of the same type of rock. (Example: An igneous rock can be melted and made into a different igneous rock.) Igneous Rock Metamorphic Rock Sedimentary Rock Rock Cycle Practice Think/pair/share: Tell the story of how this sedimentary rock could turn to a metamorphic rock, then to an igneous rock. Rock Cycle Practice • Worksheet: Let’s do the first one together! • Finish the rest of the worksheet • Notice that for the last few “rock strips” you get to pick the types of rock. Vocabulary Box Rock cycle: The ways that the earth’s materials change from one rock type to another in no particular order. (any type of rock can become any other type of rock) 6/4/12 Exit ticket …could Tell how this become a sedimentary metamorphic rock… rock.
