JESUS CHRISTCOMPLETE REVELATION
PERSON
1-4
1. Christ is superior to the prophets
2. Christ is superior to angels
3. Christ is superior to Moses
4. Christ is superior because He offers
“ultimate” rest
THE CONCEPT OF “REST” IN
SCRIPTURE
Creation: 7th day, God ceased working
Sabbath: 7th day, man ceased working
Sabbath year: 7th year, rest the land
Year of Jubilee: after 7 groups of 7 years
(50th year), rest the land, clear all debts
THE CONCEPT OF “REST” IN
SCRIPTURE
Canaan: after 40 years of wandering, Israel
entered the promise land (rest)
What happened to the Jews who died
in the wilderness?
Because of unbelief, they forfeited
the promise land “rest”!
THE CONCEPT OF “REST” IN
SCRIPTURE
WARNING TO THE READERS OF HEBREWS
If the readers, like the Jews in the wilderness,
disobey and fail to be diligent, they may
forfeit a future “rest”
This future “rest” is most likely a reference to
rewards in heaven

PRIEST
5-10
1. Christ is superior in His qualifications
To be a priest in Judaism, one must:
1. Be appointed by God for that specific duty
(Aaron and the Levites- Exodus 28)
2. Balance compassion for the people with a
harshness against sin
Christ fulfilled both perfectly
BEWARE OF
PERMANENT
DULLNESS
5:11-6:20
The Issue: the readers’ immaturity
1. “dull of hearing”- they have heard the
gospel so much, they are tired of it
2. “in need of milk”- they are not mature
enough to handle deeper truths of faith
3. “a baby, not mature”- they have not applied
& practiced what they know intellectually

Who are these people?
Hebrews 6:4-5
For in the case of those who have once been
enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly
gift and have been made partakers of the
Holy Spirit, and have tasted the good word of
God and the powers of the age to come,

What really happens to these people?
Hebrews 6:6a
and then have fallen away, it is impossible to
renew them again to repentance…
BEWARE OF
PERMANENT
DULLNESS
5:11-6:20
1. Arminian view: believers who have
forfeited (lost) their salvation
2. Professing believers view: those who never
truly experience salvation (not believers)
3. Works/rewards view: immature believers
who forfeit rewards in heaven
BEWARE OF
PERMANENT
DULLNESS
5:11-6:20
What really happens to these people?
A suggested solution
In some hardened, unrepentant, fallen away
believers it is impossible for us/anyone to
renew them to repentance due to their choice
of permanent dullness
(This is not forfeiting salvation)
PRIEST
5-10
1. Christ is superior in His qualifications
2. Christ is superior in His priestly order
Who is Melchizedek?
1. A priest-king with nothing recorded of his
family, country or history
2. O.T. “theophany” of Jesus Christ (special
appearance for a brief but important task)
PRIEST
5-10
What is the significance of the connection
between Melchizedek & Christ?
1. Melchizedek= righteous king
Salem= shalom= peace (Jeru-salem?)
Jesus is the king of righteousness & peace!
PRIEST
5-10
What is the significance of the connection
between Melchizedek & Christ?
2. Genesis 14:17-20
Abraham (the great-grandfather of Levite
priests) gives 1/10 to Melchizedek in honor
PRIEST
5-10
What is the significance of the connection
between Melchizedek & Christ?
2. Genesis 14:17-20
This tribute is timeless- it covers every
generation since
Levite priests are inferior to the
Melchizedek priest (Jesus)
PRIEST
5-10
1. Christ is superior in His qualifications
2. Christ is superior in His priestly order
3. Christ is superior in His priestly ministry
