One examination.
One piece of coursework
The Examination
• Based on the theme “Love Through the Ages”.
• You will study a variety of:
– Different genre texts (plays, poetry and novels)
– From different time periods (Chaucer to the present
day)
– Written by different authors (male, female, different
cultures)
• All with the theme of love.
• The exam will contain four different unseen
texts, which you have to compare and relate to
your wider reading.
Exam texts
• This is not absolutely certain but here are
some texts you are likely to study:
– The Wife of Bath (Geoffrey Chaucer)
– ‘Tis Pity She’s a Whore (John Ford)
– Wuthering Heights (Emily Bronte)
– The Color Purple (Alice Walker)
– A variety of poetry from across the years
– Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Tennessee Williams)
The Coursework
• A 3000 word essay.
• Comparing three texts, one of which must
be Shakespeare.
• Focused on:
– Comparison
– Form, structure and language
– Exploring interpretations of texts
– Some understanding of context
• The comparison will be thematic.
• We will be studying The Kite Runner (Khaled
Hosseini), Othello (William Shakespaere) and A
Woman of No Importance (Oscar Wilde).
• If you wish to swap A Woman of No Importance
for another text of your choice, you can but I
must approve it first.
• All of these texts can also be used as wider
reading texts in your examination on “Love
Through the Ages”
Key Dates
• Studying texts from now until end of term.
• You must have an essay question (which you will come
up with yourself) and a plan BEFORE you leave for the
summer holidays.
• First draft is due in on the first lesson back in September.
• Final draft due in at end of Christmas term.
• You have the opportunity to have more than one draft
marked between Sept and Dec – it depends how
motivated you are!
• You will be assigned a tutor from one of your teachers,
who will be responsible for marking and helping you, but
ultimately, it is your responsibility to keep working on it,
when we are doing other work in class.
