In addition, the cultural heritage classic and ecclesial was the breeding ground for new trends. In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Italy has become the cultural center of Europe, giving rise to the Renaissance. At the same time, has become one of the battlefields in Europe, undergoing the hegemony of various powers including the Spanish Empire. The heritage of the Renaissance • The Renaissance was an Italian phenomenon which made school in Europe on all fields of life: speculative, literary, artistic, scientific, economic, town planning , associative, the first bank and the first University. • The genes of Giotto, Piero Della Francesca, Leonardo, Raffaello, Machiavelli, Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Galileo Galilei, Botticelli, Bellini, Antonello da Messina, Caravaggio,…an endless list of people that with their ingenuity have marked the path of future civil societies. • Today Italy remains an “open-air museum” of the most beautiful in the world still; although it was robbed and continues to be robbed by the illegal trade in works of art. SICILY…LAMPEDUSA : the first frontiers towards Europe! SYRIA ERITREA EGYPT SOMALIA GAMBIA MALI AFGANISTAN NIGERIA PAKISTAN SENEGAL SUDAN …The relatively short distance to Lampedusa encourages more people to risk the journey. Many thousands of people risk their lives , fleeing conflict and instability in Africa and the Middle East, in small, often decrepit vessels in an attempt to reach European territories. EXDODUS • The departure is just the continuation of a long list of tragedies : abuses, violence, rapes, exploitation, rejections, dead…that accompany a long exodus crossing the routes of African deserts ... that often crashing a few meters from the Sicilian coast. This human trafficking is a lucrative business for crime. • It is the law of the market: demand and supply! That part of desperate people who will have the luck to arrive safe and sound will not stay in Italy only, but in many continue their trip towards Germany, Uk, France, Scandinavia … MEDITERRANEAN SEA … sicily coasts vast CEMETERY of nameless graves! THANKS LAMPEDUSA ! • We could talk and discuss about this issue that is increasing dramatically searching culprits or solutions. • But one thing is certain: the very small island of Lampedusa and its people, Sicily, the Italian Coast Guard, aid organizations, fishing boats ,common people… at the moment are the only lifeline for illegal migrants. • You can not describe what an enormous and painful load Lampedusa must face , how much human compassion and help civil society can express during these tragedies without asking questions about : race, origin, religion, age, condition, job… • LAMPEDUSA feels ALONE and forgotten however . • LAMPEDUSA CAN’T SAY “ IT ISN’T MY AFFAIR! “ • It is a problem that is having a strong impact on the Italian system that currently is weak economically • Racism, suspicion, quality accommodation ,hunting the clandestine ( that man who commits Italian finances !!)are topics from electoral propaganda of extremist and xenophobic groups. • It isn’t a problem that affects Italy only but all Europe from which we expect support and resources still.
