Western HISTORY born in Italy!
• Italy has a history of the richest and
oldest in the world. Closely related to
Western culture and the history of
Europe, but also to the civilization of
the Mediterranean basin, has lived the
major historical events of the Western
world.
• Italy has inherited ancient cultures such as those
of Shardana , the Etruscans or the Latins, was the
place of origin of Greek and Carthaginian
colonies.
You can see the
high number of
Greek site in
Sicily only!
The magnitude of the Roman Empire
• We can’t talk about Roman Empire because it
would talk about the vast history of the West,
because is the root of the greatest European
cultures of today.
• The Roman Empire has represented the “History
for excellence”, the crib of the Right and of Laws,
an example of great culture , perfection,
elegance, refinement of a social and military
organization that arouses astonishment and
admiration still .
The Barbarian Invasions
• After the fall of the Western Roman Empire,
medieval Italy was subject to invasion and
domination by Germanic peoples, such as the
Goths, the Lombards and the Normans that
plundered the wonders of Roman civilization,
bringing the civilization clock back in time.
The Middle Ages and the Papacy
• During the Middle Ages Italy remains fragmented
into a mosaic of city-states that fought each other
for hegemony over the rest of the Mediterranean
basin, with the frequent interventions of the
surrounding powers and the Catholic Church. Its
geographical location has made yes that became
the key to European trade and this has
encouraged the Maritime Republics such as
Amalfi, Pisa, Genoa and Venice. The spiritual
power of the Pope, which had its headquarters in
Rome, Italy in particular has had repercussions on
many events.
The Maritime Republics
The Renaissance
• .
This heritage of political importance meant to draw in home power
struggles between the rulers of Europe. In addition, the cultural
heritage classic and ecclesial was the breeding ground for new trends.
In the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Italy has become the cultural
center of Europe, giving rise to the Renaissance. At the same time, has
become one of the battlefields in Europe, undergoing the hegemony of
various powers including the Spanish Empire.
The heritage of the Renaissance
• The Renaissance was an Italian phenomenon which made
school in Europe on all fields of life: speculative, literary,
artistic, scientific, economic, town planning , associative,
the first bank and the first University.
• The genes of Giotto, Piero Della Francesca, Leonardo,
Raffaello, Machiavelli, Michelangelo, Brunelleschi, Galileo
Galilei, Botticelli, Bellini, Antonello da Messina,
Caravaggio,…an endless list of people that with their
ingenuity have marked the path of future civil societies.
• Today Italy remains an “open-air museum” of the most
beautiful in the world still; although it was robbed and
continues to be robbed by the illegal trade in works of art.
From the sixteenth century till today
• After the Italian wars of the sixteenth century fell
under the hegemony of foreign powers such as
France, Spain and Austria.
• During the Risorgimento fought for independence
and for the unit until in 1861 it was proclaimed the
Kingdom of Italy under Savoia Family, which lasted
until 1946.
• Italy took part to the World War I.
• After the Fascist period and the defeat in World War
II, following a plebiscite the Italian State became a
Republic.
TODAY
• Certainly today continuing to build Italy with the requirements
that the EU is asking to us is not easy!
• Many challenges are still waiting for answers:
• The spread crisis in Europe of : economy , European systems,
international policy.
• Youth employment through a new impetus to scientific research
and the promotion of Italian tourist and environmental vocation.
• A review of policy and organizational having a bureaucratic
approach more efficient.
• The gap exists between North and South still , in terms of
infrastructure and welfare
• The fight against corruption, organized crime ...
• New intercultural challenges…
Europe challenges
• European Countries , now elderly average age, to maintain still
their privileges and conveniences need of new ,fresh ,young
human capital with strong arms.
• While UE argues about its capitalism, on the specter of
terrorism, ignores their responsibilities on the destiny of the
global world ( consumerism, coltan mines for ITC, energies
founts :-water- food- oil - metals- methan…) feeding conflicts.
• Even today, East and North Africa gripped by poverty, hunger
and lack of human rights …look to Europe.
• Europe's borders are no longer boundaries but roads for
freedom, walls to split against indifference, last solution to
survival.
SICILY…LAMPEDUSA :
the first frontiers towards Europe!
SYRIA
ERITREA
EGYPT
SOMALIA
GAMBIA
MALI
AFGANISTAN
NIGERIA
PAKISTAN
SENEGAL
SUDAN
…The relatively short distance to Lampedusa encourages more people
to risk the journey. Many thousands of people risk their lives , fleeing
conflict and instability in Africa and the Middle East, in small, often
decrepit vessels in an attempt to reach European territories.
EXDODUS
• The departure is just the continuation of a long list
of tragedies : abuses, violence, rapes, exploitation,
rejections, dead…that accompany a long exodus
crossing the routes of African deserts ... that often
crashing a few meters from the Sicilian coast. This
human trafficking is a lucrative business for crime.
• It is the law of the market: demand and supply!
That part of desperate people who will have the
luck to arrive safe and sound will not stay in Italy
only, but in many continue their trip towards
Germany, Uk, France, Scandinavia …
MEDITERRANEAN SEA … sicily coasts
vast CEMETERY of nameless graves!
More of 500 immigrants per DAY !
• From 2000 to 2013 have died more than
23 000 migrants trying to reach Europe : 50 per
cent more than it appears from the existing
estimates.
• According to estimates of this month and
waiting for favorable sea conditions 500,000
refugees are ready to go from Libya only!
THANKS LAMPEDUSA !
• We could talk and discuss about this issue that is increasing dramatically
searching culprits or solutions.
• But one thing is certain: the very small island of Lampedusa and its people,
Sicily, the Italian Coast Guard, aid organizations, fishing boats ,common
people… at the moment are the only lifeline for illegal migrants.
• You can not describe what an enormous and painful load Lampedusa must
face , how much human compassion and help civil society can express
during these tragedies without asking questions about : race, origin,
religion, age,condition, job…
• LAMPEDUSA feels ALONE and forgotten however .
• LAMPEDUSA CAN’T SAY “ IT ISN’T MY AFFAIR! “
• It is a problem that is having a strong impact on the
Italian system that currently is weak economically
• Racism, suspicion, quality accommodation ,hunting the
clandestine ( that man who commits Italian finances
!!)are topics from electoral propaganda of extremist and
xenophobic groups.
• It isn’t a problem that affects Italy only but all Europe
from which we expect support and resources still.
Many problems , many ideas,
many proposals for a New UE…
but…everything must always take
account of HUMAN DIGNITY !
IT’S AN ITALIAN PROPOSAL
TO FIGHT HUNGER IN OUR
NEAR AND FAR WORLD !
• Expo Milano 2015 is the Universal Exhibition that Italy will
host from May 1 to October 31, 2015 and will be the biggest
organized Event on Nutrition. For six months, Milan will
become a global showcase in which Countries will show the
best of their technologies to give a concrete answer to a
vital need: being able to provide healthy food, safe and
sufficient for all peoples, in respect for the planet and its
equilibria. An exhibition area of 1.1 million square meters
more than 140 countries and international organizations will
be involved .
WE HOPE AND WANT TO BELIEVE IT : A SMALL STEP
FOR A NEW INTEGRAL HUMANISM , A NEW
