Penguins By Kyla Conner Objectives • You will identify the life cycle of a penguin. • You will be able to identify different types of penguins. • You will be able to identify the different habits of penguins. • You will be able to identify the predators of penguins. What do you already know about penguins? Life Cycle of a Penguin • Mother Penguins will lay one or • • • • two eggs in their nest. The nest can be underground or made of stones and grass. The Father Penguin and the Mother Penguin take turns taking care of the egg. The chick then pecks its way out of the egg. The chick will grow up and find a mate. Penguins mate for life. Penguins can live up to 20 years. Rock hopper Penguins • Rock hoppers have brightly • • • colored feathers on their head. They eat krill, small fish, and squid. They get their name because they hop over the rocks on the shores where they live. They make their nests out of grass. •Their predators are blue sharks, leopard seals, and fur seals. •They are very loud birds. Adelie Penguins • The smallest penguins in • • • • • Antarctica. They make their nests out of pebbles on rocky beaches. They have a white belly with a black head and back. They move around land by sliding on their bellies. They eat small fish. Their predators are leopard seals. Emperor Penguins • The largest of all the • • • • penguins. After the egg is laid, the mother goes off to feed while the father penguin keeps the egg warm. The mother comes back when the chick hatches. They live in the coldest climate, and make their nests on the packed ice. They eat fish and squid, and their main predators are leopard seals. King Penguins • The are identified by the • • • • orange yellow patch on their chests. They are the second largest penguin in Antarctica. They find their food by diving deep into the depths of the sea. They eat krill, fish, squid and plankton. Their main predators are killer whales and leopard seals.
