Alex Nazarov 100W MoWe 1:30 Scary Story Someone’s Scared Females and males have opposing viewpoints regarding campus safety at SJSU. For Takamasa Kagiyama, being a biologist jokingly brings him a sense of safety. “If what happened in Ohio happens here, I think someone in the business building is most likely to bring a gun on campus,” said Kagiyama, the junior biology major. “Business majors don’t have a vision for their future, that’s what scares me.” The light attitude toward safety didn’t come from his major. Alex Edwards, a senior business major, simply said “yes” in response to feeling safe on campus. When females were asked the same question, the conversation would turn serious. “Once this guy was getting way too close and he wouldn’t go away,” said Kristin Anthony, a senior public relations major. The moment occurred last semester after leaving a night class from Dwight Bentel Hall. “Since then, I’ve been carrying pepper spray and I ask classmates to walk me to my car.” Another female student who preferred to stay anonymous shared how a man once groped her butt in an on-campus elevator. The SJSU Police Department recommends students to be aware of their surroundings, avoid walking alone at night or when the campus is closed, and to report suspicious activity to police. Any student who wants a police escort can call SJSU police at (408) 924-2222 or use a campus blue-light police services phone. Anonymous tips can be sent to the SJSU Police Department via email to sjsu@tipnow.org or text to (408) 337-2919.
