Dear Puppet Labs Human Resources,
I am writing to apply for the Accounting Internship available at your Portland office. When I
found the posting through the University of Oregon Career Center it captured my attention
because it offers experience in a variety of accounting areas. After further researching the
company I am excited at the prospect of becoming a part of the collaborative community
environment at Puppet Labs. My detail-oriented personality and strong interpersonal
communication skills will allow me to succeed in this internship position.
Before returning to college to study Accounting I spent several years gaining work experience,
most prominently as a golf club salesman. Fiddler’s Green Golf Co. is well known for offering
custom fitting, which often involves special orders from manufacturers. The store has a
purchaser that calls in the orders and sometimes errors were made during this process due to a
lack of clarity about what features the salesmen were requesting. I averted this problem by
personally explaining custom orders to the purchaser to ensure that every detail was accurate.
Other employees adopted this policy and needless errors were avoided.
My sales experience dramatically improved my interpersonal communication skills by allowing
me to interact with people who had varying backgrounds and values. I was hired to Fiddler’s
Green as a recent high school graduate and was one of the youngest salesmen at the company.
On one occasion during my second year working at Fiddler’s Green a customer was initially
unsure of my qualifications due to my age and the perceived lack of expertise that comes along
with this. I was able to demonstrate my superior product knowledge and communicate with him
in a professional manner, which led to him requesting my assistance on future visits. This
capacity to effectively communicate will allow me to excel when working with other Puppet
Labs employees.
