Every weekend, Mitty and his parents go to their weekend home in Connecticut. While Mitty is there, he finds four books on smallpox, his biology topic. In one of the books there is an envelope containing smallpox scabs that he accidentally inhales. Chapter 2 • After coming back from Connecticut, Mitty had tons of homework, not to mention, ten pages of notes. At school the next day, his friend Derek, goes on and on about the anthrax murders. After school, Mitty starts on his notes, but decides to skip to his rough draft instead. Mitty continued to read about smallpox, everything happening to the people he is reading about could be happening to him too. Chapter 3 • In chapter 3, Mitty goes to a medical library with Olivia Clark (his crush). At the library, Mitty finds his smallpox epidemic in which there were 1024 cases but only 190 died. Then Olivia helps Mitty with his notes, and encourages him to do well on his paper. Chapter 4 • After his parents leave, Mitty reads more about smallpox and starts his paper. Then Mitty goes to eat at Gray’s Papaya. Since he read so much about smallpox, Mitty began to imagine having symptoms of smallpox. Chapter 5 • Being paranoid about smallpox, Mitty didn’t sleep well. Then Mitty is assigned yet another paper! When he hands in his biology “notes” Mr. Lynch is surprised to see that he has almost finished the whole assignment. Chapter 6 • In chapter 6, Mitty comes home and can’t find his smallpox books, but finds them under his bed. Mitty discovers there is an old smallpox hospital in New York where part of a Spider Man movie was filmed so he goes to take pictures. Then Mitty learns about bioterrorists who are people who try to wipe out part of a country by spreading an infectious disease. Chapter 7 • Mitty was late for school because he slept in, but found out he got an A on his English test. In the library researching smallpox, Mitty finds that smallpox is probably not infectious after 100 years, so he starts to sing and dance. Then Mitty goes to the girls basketball game after school with Olivia. Chapter 8 • That weekend at their cabin, Mitty and his parents watched U Conn basketball most of the weekend. Mitty began to finish the last two sections of his biology report. Once he is done he e-mails scientists about finding smallpox scabs. Though he didn’t notice, Mitty’s inbox was swarming with mail from scientists from all over the country. Chapter 9 • After school the next day, Mitty read his emails. Most e-mails were answering the question of whether it is still infectious, but others wanted to find the scabs for many odd reasons. Some people were collectors and others just wanted them. One person even forwarded the e-mail to the F.B.I. as if Mitty was a threat. Chapter 10 • Mitty began to think he might have smallpox, so he thinks of places to go to die. He woke early the next day to head to school. He ate breakfast at a diner. On a bench facing the Hudson River, Mitty began to write a good-bye letter to his parents explaining how and why he went into hiding. Chapter 11 • After school Mitty heads to his apartment, but Olivia catches him and starts talking about Valentines Day coming up. Thinking he had smallpox, Mitty says nothing which makes Olivia cry. He decides not to apologize since he is dieing anyway. Chapter 12 • Olivia and Mitty don’t come to school the next day and no one knows why. Then Derek is pulled from class by the F.B.I. trying to find Mitty. After getting a call at her house from school, Olivia rushes to school, worried about Mitty, and after reading Mitty’s apparent suicide letter the F.B.I. think he is dead, but Olivia and Derek think otherwise. Chapter 13 • In chapter 13, Mitty wakes up in a cold warehouse, taped to the floor with duct tape and he vomits on himself. He remembers a woman calling his name and him getting into a car with her. Then two guards come and unleash him. The men see he is sick and leave. Mitty realizes he has to stay with them to protect New York from smallpox. Chapter 14 • Mitty and Olivia don’t come to school and the F.B.I. come and interrogate Derek. Olivia rushes to school to help find Mitty. They assume Mitty has gone into hiding because he thinks he has smallpox. Chapter 15 • Mitty is still trapped in a basement, he hasn’t eaten and he is starving. Then the guards feed him McDonalds. Mitty starts collecting things like nails and electrical cords for weapons against the guards. Chapter 16 • In chapter 16, Mitty is still trapped in a basement, but now he is becoming ill. After days of lying on a cot Mitty was covered in vomit and his own pee. Then when the guards came down for a third time, Mitty attacked. He had been faking the whole time!!!!!! Now Mitty was locked in a basement with two foreign strangers who had been trying to kill him and most of New York. Chapter 17 • A phone in the floor above Mitty rang. Then Mitty shuts off the lights and poisonous carbon monoxide begans to seep into the basement. Soon all three captives will be dead. Not long after their fight Mitty slumped to the floor. Chapter 18 • Olivia thinks that Mitty jumped in the river, but Derek thinks otherwise. Neither of them give up hope on finding him. Chapter 19 • Nearly dead, Mitty began to hear voices upstairs.
