Archetype Project
For the following tasks, you must choose one of three sources to demonstrate your knowledge of
archetypal characters, settings, and plot, i.e., the Hero’s Journey.*
1) Your summer reading project text: The Alchemist or Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows.
2) A story or your choice—this can include a either a print text or film—that contains
enough archetypal characters and settings and adheres strictly to the Hero’s Journey
stages to provide adequate examples for the below tasks. You MUST get approval for
the text, and you MAY NOT use Star Wars. Works to consider: The Pearl, Holes other
Harry Potter novels or films; Lord of the Rings novels or films; The Hunger Games
novels or films; animated features, Disney and non- (e.g., the Shrek series, the Toy Story
series, The Lion King, Aladdin, Finding Nemo, etc.); one of the Indiana Jones films; etc.
3) Compose your own story modeled after the Hero’s Journey. You may complete this in
the format of a short story, comic book, screenplay, or short film. Consider casting
yourself as the hero, perhaps in the form of an alter ego. You will not use an outside text
but have to quote yourself to complete this assignment.
*Before you begin your project, you must get teacher approval on your choice.
