Registers, authorizes, and coordinates services for children, youth, and young adults who are experiencing emotional and behavioral challenges or are developmentally and intellectually disabled.

Parents are the natural guardian until the age of majority

Legally a person becomes their own guardian
A person can apply to become the guardian of another person through the courts
Psychological testing with an IQ is often requested to assist with the guardianship process.

Social Security Income
Parent’s income is no longer a factor in determining their child’s eligibility for SSI when the child turns 18.
SSI benefits can include monetary and/or medical benefits.

Medicaid
Students should apply for Medicaid at age 18.
Medicaid will act as a secondary insurance if the student is covered by their parent’s health insurance.

The New Jersey Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services
(DVRS) assists students with disabilities who will require services in order to prepare for, get, and keep a job. The ultimate goal is to create a smooth transition from school to work, so that upon graduation, a student is prepared to begin work and/or post secondary training that leads to employment.

DVRS will provide the following services at no cost to the individual:
Diagnostic evaluation, vocational counseling and guidance, job placement, supported employment services, on-the-job training, job coaching, and work adjustment training in a community rehabilitation program.

Referral can be made to DVRS to have a student assessed to determine if they are eligible for DVRS services as early as two years before their exit from school.

Division of Developmental Disabilities
A New Jersey State agency within the Department of Human
Services (DHS), DDD is the lead provider of services for people with developmental disabilities age 21 and older. The Division offers family support, community services, case management, residential and day programs.

Student must complete an intake to determine if they are
eligible for DDD services.
At this time the intake can be completed around the
21 st birthday.
Student must have active SSI and Medicaid to be eligible for DDD services.
A Psychological with an IQ that has been completed within the last 1-2 years is typically required during the eligibility process.

If the student is determined to be eligible for DDD services
A support coordination agency can be selected by the student/guardian or DDD will assign one to the student.
Student/guardian should begin to work with supports coordinator to identify potential adult placements.

State funding (DDD) is changing to FFS. Providers will only be paid when service is rendered. Days out of program cannot exceed 30 per year.
Presently Bancroft is in a FFS pilot arrangement with DDD. Other providers throughout the State will be changing to FFS on 7/1/2015 with a target Implementation date of January 2016.
