Measuring Yourself

MEASURING YOURSELF
Please take the following measurements as described below. It is essential that you are as accurate
as possible. Do not try to take these on your own as the results will not be accurate enough. Please
enlist somebody to help you. Make sure that the tape measure is straight when taking the
measurements. If you don’t the results will be skewed. We also suggest that you take each
measurement three times and take the average, as sometimes there are minor differences between
each measurement taken for the same body part.
Please take all measurements in centimetres.
INSEAM: You will need a spirit level (preferable) or failing this, a carpenter’s framing square or a
large hardback book. Before you take this measurement, sit on your current bike and clip into the
pedals. Get somebody to measure the distance between your feet. Now stand against a flat wall on
level ground wearing thin socks or bare feet. Space your feet so they are the same distance apart as
they were when you were clipped in. Place the spirit level between your legs pressing lightly up into
your crotch and ensure that it is level. If you are using the framing square or a book, push the top
edge lightly up into your crotch and ensure that the framing square or books spine is flat up against
the wall. Get your helper to measure from the top of the spirit level/book to the floor. This is your
INSEAM.
Inseam measurement _______cm
STERNAL NOTCH TO CROTCH: Using the same stance as
above, measure from your sternal notch (this is the little
bone at the bottom of the hollow triangle at the base of
your throat) to the top of the spirit level/framing
square/book.
Sternal notch to crotch measurement _______cm
HEIGHT: Maintaining the stance above, place the spirit
level/book parallel to the top of your head. Measure
from the bottom of the spirit level/framing square/book
to the floor.
Height: _______cm
STERNAL NOTCH TO FLOOR: Still using the same stance,
with the spirit level/framing square/book removed, measure
from your sternal notch to the floor.
Sternal notch to floor measurement ______cm
ARM LENGTH: Stand with your back to a wall. Hold a pencil or similar object in your right fist,
extend your arm out flat against the wall at a 45 degree angle to the body (down and to your right)
keeping your wrist in a natural position (knuckles facing the wall). Measure from the pencil to the
top of the joint in your shoulder (this is the little bony protuberance). Repeat with your left arm. If
there is any difference between the measurements for each arm, add both together and divide by 2.
Arm length ______cm
FEMUR LENGTH: This is taken in a seated position. Find a position where your femur is parallel to
the ground keeping you back straight (preferably against a wall). Measure from the front of the
knee to the hip socket. Do this for each leg and take the average as for arm length.
Femur length: _______cm
Shoe size: _______cm
Weight: _______kgs
