Why did it lead to violence? Split Nebraska into 2 territories and they used popular sovereignty. Angry proslavery supporters and anti-slavery supporters attacked each other. 10. How did Kansas get the nickname “Bleeding Kansas”? Violence broke out over whether Kansas would allow slavery or not. 11.Why did the Republican Party exist and whom did they break away from? Leaders wanted to stop the spread of slavery to the west. Broke away from the Whigs 12. Dred Scott Decision Dred Scott was not given the right to sue his owner because he was African American. Slavery was legal in all territories because living in a free territory did not make one free. 13. Why did Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln become rivals? Both wanted the same government position. Douglas called Lincoln an abolitionist. Both courted the same women, Mary Todd. 14. What did John Brown do to get sentenced to death? Planned an attack on an arsenal to lead a slave revolt. 15. Both sides chose candidates that they believed would benefit their causes concerning the future of slavery. 26.
