YOUR NEW BFF: THE PLANNER
 You are expected to fill out your planner at the end of each day during check out.
 You will put a check mark next to completed work.
 You will circle all unfinished work.
 Here are some acronyms we’ll use in the planner:

WB – workbook

WS – worksheet

BR – book report

J – journal
HOW SHOULD I USE MY PLANNER AT HOME?
 Show your parent/guardian your planner nightly. (If your parents are gone, have
an adult you’re staying with fulfill their role.)
 If you’ve completed your work, have them sign it.
 They should only sign one time per night, unless I write a note that needs to be
acknowledged.
 They should not sign the planner if your work is not finished.
HOW WILL MY PLANNER BE GRADED?
 You will receive one point per day, if all of the following are met:

Your planner is filled out.

All your work is complete.

Your planner is signed.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I HAVE A MISSING AND/OR
LATE ASSIGNMENT?
 You must make arrangements to make up the work. Taking a “zero” is not an
option – if it was important enough for me to assign, then it’s important for your
learning to complete.
 Any late work will earn a reduced grade of 10% per day.
 Some ideas for making up work include:

On your first late assignment of the quarter, you will use your late coupon. (You
will still need to make up the work within one day, but your grade will not be
reduced.)

Come before school for help. (If you’re able to get the assignment completed
before the bell rings and have me sign your planner, it won’t be considered late!)

Make arrangements to stay in during recess for help and to complete your work.

Go to before or after school club to complete your work.
HOW WILL I BE GRADED?
 On a graded task, you will get the grade you earn.

Sometimes grades are based on completion and sometimes they’re based on the
number correct.

Although you may not earn a new grade, sometimes I’ll ask you to “re-do” an
assignment. Re-dos are sometimes necessary for learning/growth.

We will use the school grading chart:

A
93-100

B
85-92

C
77-84

D
70-76

F
69 and below
WHEN WILL I RECEIVE MY CORRECTED WORK?
 On the last day of each week we’ll do a “paper pass” and you’ll receive your
corrected work from the week.
 All corrected work will go into a brown envelope.

On this envelope, you’ll write the number of papers given out during that week’s
paper pass.

Bring the brown envelope home, let your parent/guardian review your corrected
work, and have them sign next to the paper pass entry number.

Return with the envelope on the first day of the next week.
I HEARD THERE’S A LOT OF HOMEWORK IN 6TH
GRADE – IS THAT TRUE?
 The general rule of thumb is that students should take home about 10 minutes of
homework per grade level each night.

Since you are in the 6th grade, you can expect about 60 minutes of homework
each night.

However, some nights you may have more homework, some nights you may have
less.

Typically there will be more work on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and
less work on Mondays and Fridays.
 Throughout the years I’ve had some students take home very little homework,
maybe simply studying or reading at home. How you use your time during the day
affects the amount of work you take home.
WHAT CAN I WORK ON AT HOME?
 Spelling

Review your weekly study cards
 Read

Book reports

Strengthening skills
 Study

Tests
HOW CAN I BE SUCCESSFUL IN THE 6TH GRADE?
 Find a good work area at home.

Preferably not in front of the TV and without handheld devices.

Take time to review materials each night, even if you’ve completed your work.
 Hand in work on time.

Homework is due the next day unless otherwise stated/noted.

Students are allowed one day to complete homework for every day absent.
 Have supplies available at home and remind your parent/guardian if you need to
replace supplies.
 Get sleep and eat well.
 ASK QUESTIONS!

I cannot read your mind – if you have a question, please be sure to talk to me.
HOW AM I EXPECTED TO BEHAVE IN THE 6TH
GRADE?
 We will follow all rules stated on the Discipline Plan and the Bullying Policy within
the Student/Parent Handbook.
 In addition, we basically follow the “Golden Rule” in our classroom. Specific
classroom rules are:

Respect the teacher.

Respect others.

Respect the school.
 We will have opportunities to Earn Activity Time (E.A.T.) by following the rules and
by going above and beyond expectations.
WHAT ARE CONSEQUENCES FOR NOT
FOLLOWING RULES?
 You will need to write down the offense which took place on the accountability
clipboard.

Be specific as to what happened.

For each offense, at the end of the quarter you will need to spend 5 minutes of
your recess making up this time.
 If you are committing offenses at an unreasonable rate, parents will be informed
with a phone call from yourself, or the teacher.
WHAT IS E.A.T.?
 E.A.T. stands for “Earned Activity Time”.
 You can earn minutes for doing well as individuals, groups, and/or as a whole
class.
 However, you can lose points if any person, group, or the class does something
disappointing.
 The class may elect to use this time for activities including, but not limited to:

Extended Art time

SKUNK/Farkle/Apples to Apples/Hedbanz

YouTube
HOW CAN MY PARENT/GUARDIAN CONTACT
THE TEACHER?
 I always have an “open door” policy.
 Parents/guardians can also communicate via the planner. They may write notes
to me in the planner. Also, if I write a note to them, they should reply in the
planner near the original note.
 I can be contacted via phone at the school (537-5414) from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.
 If it isn’t urgent, I can be contacted by email at dan.seykora@k12.nd.us.
HOW CAN WE CHECK WHAT’S HAPPENING IN
6TH GRADE AT HOME?
 Use, and get comfortable with, the classroom website!
 The website contains many tabs that can be useful.

Daily work will be posted under the “Daily Assignments” tab. If you forget your
planner, this would be a great place to look for the list of assigned work.

Our classroom procedures and even our schedule, as well as a link to
PowerSchool can be accessed under the “Parents” tab.

“Classroom Resources” is an area where you can locate web addresses to aid in
learning the material we are covering.
