Building a Responsible Mentoring Program
These day-long workshops will provide youth-service professionals and community leaders with the opportunity to learn about the Elements of
Effective Practice for operating a quality mentoring program. Day one covers mission statements and goals, program management strategies, mentor recruitment, screening and training. In day two, participants analyze the matching process and discuss how to provide consistent match support. Participants will learn strategies for recognizing and retaining mentors and will be introduced to the development of program evaluations.
Appropriate for new program managers or experienced managers with less than 3 years’ experience.

NAMI-Northern Virginia Basics Classes For Parents
Basics is a free, 3 or 6-week education class for parents of children and teens with emotional or behavioral challenges. It is not necessary that the child has received a diagnosis. Student Program: Educational slide presentation by a Level 1 Trauma Surgeon, a Trauma Unit Visit witnessing mock resuscitation of a trauma victim, EMS Visit with tour of an ambulance and Q&A session with fire & rescue personnel. Teen crash survivors share their experience. Parent Program: Is held concurrently with the student program. 21st Annual Northern Virginia Regional Student Mediation Conference
Elementary schools throughout Northern Virginia and the District of Columbia are invited to attend the 21st Annual Student Mediation Conference at George Mason University. Participants will attend one of eight workshops ranging from basic mediation skills to advanced mediation skills. All workshops focus on improving effective communication and conflict resolution skills. Strides For Success
On Your Mark. Get Set. Run to the Junior League of Northern Virginia’s Strides for Success! The Eight Annual Strides for Success 5K race and 1K
Family Fun Run/Walk provides runners of all levels and ages an engaging event focused on fitness and healthy eating. All proceeds benefit the
JLNV’s mission, including our community programs such as Kids in the Kitchen, an anti-obesity program that will be on-site promoting healthy eating habits and fitness. Registration fees are $30 for adults and $20 for children aged 10 and under. The Fun Run/Walk is $15 per person.

Healthy Lifestyles for Tweens and Teens

Facilitated by court intake counselors, group offers peer support, information/education for parents/legal guardians of adolescents who exhibit behavior problems: criminal activity either within the family or community; habitually or frequently running away from home or staying out without permission; habitual truancy; alcohol/drug use; sexual acting out; defiance of parent(s) and out of control behavior at home, school, or in the community. Focus of the group is to provide information to parents about the law, court services, and other relevant programs. Emotional support are also elements of the group process. For those parents who have up-coming court hearings, information is available on what to expect and how to prepare themselves to assist the judge in understanding their case. Free of charge.

Way to P.E.A.C.E. (Youth Violence Prevention Program)
Way to PEACE is a collaborative, community-based youth violence prevention program. The program presents the subject matter through the arts - film or live theater performances –and conducts interactive workshops to engage youth and their caregivers in meaningful dialogue. Schools, faith organizations or youth service organizations can host workshops on bullying, teen dating violence, healthy relationships, and even financial stability for the families (a factor closely tied to incidence of violence).

Mental Health First Aid
Mental Health First Aid is a two-day course that teaches a 5-step action plan offering initial help to people with the signs and symptoms of a mental illness or in crisis, and connecting them with the appropriate professional, peer, social, or self-help care.
You will learn warning signs and risk factors for: depression, anxiety disorders, trauma, psychotic disorders, substance use and eating disorders.
The course is open to all members of our community and there is a $25 fee for materials.
