French Education Miami University Teaching experience: Nine years as a middle school French teacher Two years as a French instructor at Miami University Educational philosophy: Every student is capable of learning a new language. High expectations = comprehension and educational success Grading policy: Students’ grades are based on participation, homework completion, quizzes and projects. Each assignment is given a point value. Grades are updated daily on PowerSchool. Homework policy: Students should expect daily homework assignments. Even if there is not specific homework assigned, all students should review the material discussed in class each night. Students should allow at least 10 minutes of homework or review each evening. All homework assignments are worth 5 points. If a student did not complete the assignment, s/he may hand it in for late credit until the end of the trimester. Absence policy: If a student is absent, s/he is allowed one week upon his/her return to school to hand in all missing assignments for full credit. After one week, assignments may be handed in for late credit. Articles and Artifacts: Every Monday students may bring in an article or an artifact. Students must bring in two articles and two artifacts per trimester and the rest are extra credit. Students should bring in the article or artifact to class (if possible), present it to the class, and fill out the article or artifact form. The goal is to expose students to current events in the French-speaking world and to show students that French is everywhere in our daily lives – we just need to start noticing it! An article (or current event) may be found in a newspaper, magazine, online news website (such as cnn.com), on the radio, etc. The current event must pertain to France or a Francophone country. An artifact is an object, an experience, etc. that is French or from a Francophone country. Artifacts can be found in your daily lives: restaurants menus, cooking supplies, cosmetics, etc. Friday’s Famous Francophone: Every Friday, we will discuss one famous Francophone individual. Students will have from Monday until Friday to research this person, print out an article about him/her, highlight at least five interesting facts, and come to class prepared to share the research. Students will also fill out the FFF form and write a summary with at least five sentences, in English, about the individual and why s/he is famous. The goal is to introduce students to the accomplishments of French-speaking individuals, past and present, from all over the world. If you have any suggestions, please email Mme Cimala. YouTube Friday Every Friday we will begin class with a funny French YouTube video in order to pump us up for the weekend! If you find a great French YouTube video on your own that you’d like us to watch on Friday, please email Mme Cimala. Euros and French Store: For every A on a quiz or a project, students will be rewarded with a euro! Students can also earn euros by winning a game in class, if everyone in the class completes homework, etc. The French store will be open twice during each trimester.
