Jon Stefan HW #3 – Original PANTHER Article 9/15/09 Anne Trafton. “PANTHER Sensor from Lincoln Laboratory Quickly Detects Pathogens.” MIT Tech Talk. September 15, 2009. http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2008/techtalk52-18.pdf The article was about how scientists at MIT’s Lincoln Laboratory invented a sensor that could detect a athgen in the air in under three minutes. The sensor is called a PANTHER. It stands for PAthogen Notification for THreatening Environmental Releases. The sensor uses CANARY technology to quickly take sample of the surrounding air and then formulates if there are any pathogens in the air. Canary birds were used in mine shafts to see if the mine was safe to be in. The CANARY technology does the same thing it tests the air to see if there are any harmful substances and then it alerts the user of the PANTHER. This PANTHER is an important new invention because it can help save lives from bioterrorist attacks. The PANTHER could alert people that there is a harmful substance in the air and people could be saved. The scientist that designed the PANTHER was James Harper. The scientists that helped design the PANTHER used CANARY technology to make the PANTHER more efficient and quicker in its air readings. They also used jellyfish DNA to help with the sensing of the pathogens in the air. This is interesting to me because the scientists at MIT are always coming up with new and improved ways of doing things and the PANTHER just shows how they are trying to help people in every aspect of life. The people that made the PANTHER might one day be heroes because their invention saved peoples’ lives. Jon Stefan HW #3 – Seminar for PANTHER 9/15/09 Dr. James D. Harper, Dr. Frances E. Nargi, Dr. Martha S. Petrovick, Dr. Todd H. Rider, and Dr. Eric D. Schwoebel. “CANARY BCell Sensor for Rapid, Sensitive Identification of Pathogens.” 2009-2010 Technical Seminar Series at MIT. September 15, 2009. http://www.ll.mit.edu/college/seminarlist.html#CANARYBCellSensorforRapidSensitiveI dentificationofPathogens The seminar described is about the PANTHER inventions and the scientists who invented it. The top scientists names are Dr. James D. Harper, Dr. Frances E. Nargi, Dr. Martha S. Petrovick, Dr. Todd H. Rider, and Dr. Eric D. Schwoebel. Dr. Harper specializes in biochemistry, Dr. Nargi in Pathobiology, Dr. Petrovick in Cell & Developmental Biology, Dr. Rider in Electrical Engineering, and Dr. Schwoebel in Molecular and Cell Biology. This seminar includes the backgrounds of the scientists work on the PANTHER and how they were able to make the idea of a PANTHER a reality. This is important to society because if someone wanted to find more about how these professors made the PANTHER they could go to this seminar and listen in on how each of them contributed to a potentially lifesaving machine. The top scientists in the invention of the PANTHER were Dr. James D. Harper, Dr. Frances E. Nargi, Dr. Martha S. Petrovick, Dr. Todd H. Rider, and Dr. Eric D. Schwoebel. The scientists used CANARY technology and jellyfish DNA to make the PANTHER a reality. This is interesting to me because the PANTHER is a potentially lifesaving invention and is a new and important part of society today. People now can be safe from biochemical warfare because of machine like the PANTHER. Jon Stefan HW #3 – Patent 9/15/09 “Optoelectronic detection system.” USPTO Pantent Full-Text and Image Database. September 15, 2009. http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nphParser?Sect1=PTO1&Sect2=HITOFF&d=PALL&p=1&u=%2Fnetahtml%2FPTO%2Fsrc hnum.htm&r=1&f=G&l=50&s1=7422860.PN.&OS=PN/7422860&RS=PN/7422860 This pantent shows a general overview of what James D. Harper and his colleagues hope to achieve in the efforts to make a pathogen locating machine. The patent describes how they will use CANARY technology to make a sensor for pathogen detection and will use it in government buikldings. It also says how the group has governemnt support for the invention. This is important to society because without the patent the machine could never be made. Dr. James D. Harper, Dr. Frances E. Nargi, Dr. Martha S. Petrovick, Dr. Todd H. Rider, and Dr. Eric D. Schwoebel are the top scientists. The scientists used CANARY technology and jellyfish DNA to make the PANTHER a reality. This is interesting to me because the PANTHER is a potentially lifesaving invention and is a new and important part of society today.
